But he does admit it won't be easy. "You're limited to a certain extent because your top 20 players are not going to come to a cold weather state," McDermott said. "The competition is getting better, but it's still not like it is on the West Coast." Since McDermott took over as coach in 1981, the Husker tennis team has been closing in on perennial Big Eight power Oklahoma State, finishing third . in the 1985 Big Eight tournament and fourth in the 1986 tournament. "This year we're looking to finish in the top two (in the Big Eight tourna ment) and get a national ranking," he said. "We've never had a national ranking and it's our goal. Then, you can tell recruits that we're a cold weather school, but we're not bad and we play a good schedule." And apparently McDermott is telling recruits the things that they want to hear. Last year, he landed a pair of highly ranked California players, Steven and Stuart Jung and signed Robert Sjo holm of Finland. McDermott recruited Sjoholm after watching him win a state championship at Columbus High School in 1982 as a foreign exchange student. This year, McDermott outmaneuvered the University of South Carolina to sign Ken Feuer of New York, who is ranked 87th in the country in the 18-year-old division. Because McDermott, 28, was just a few years older than most of his players when he became the head coach in CLASSIFIED ADVERTISING CALL 472-2588 $2 75 minimum charge per day on commercial ads. McDermott 1981, he said he had difficulty main taining proper team discipline. But now, he says, with the younger players he has developed solid player-coach relationships. "I still like to play tournaments myself and I'm ambitious to have a better program," he said. "I think they (the players) feel a little bit more com fortable because they're closer to your age, and you know what's going on. An example would be dating or school. "They look at me as somebody closer to their age who can relate." The players also relate well to each other, McDermott says. "We're a pretty united team. That's a difference between us and some of the teams we play who have better talent, Paul VonderlageDaily Nebraskan but don't get along well with each other," he said. "I think our teammates care for each other; you really know they want you to win, and that means a lot." This summer, McDermott has begun a junior development program, which he hopes will eventually pay dividends by producing homegrown major college level players. But he realizes that foot ball will remain the focus of Nebraska's sports program, and he says football has a positive effect on the tennis team. "When you contact with a recruit they go, 'Yeah, we know you have a great football team,' " McDermott said. "It brings us into the spotlight. Once you have the spotlight, you turn the attention towards the tennis program." Single & Pregnant? It can be a difficult time to make decisions. Nickolite said Vick, a 6-5 transfer from Hutchinson Junior College in Hutchinson, Kan., sustained a minor strain in his right knee during a recent pick-up game at the Nebraska Coliseum. According to Nickolite, Vick's injury occurred when he came down on his right leg and appeared to jam his knee. "It's nothing, really," Nickolite said. "At this time it appears to be a minor injury." Nickolite said it is difficult to predict if Vick will miss any of the Cornhuskers upcoming basketball season because of the difficulty in diagnosing the injury. For about two and one-half weeks following the injury, Vick was re quired by the Nebraska training staff to report to the athletic treat ment facility for daily whirlpool and physical therapy treatments. Nickolite said Nebraska officials have since given Vick clearance to resume playing basketball. "He appears to be healing well," Nickolite said. Nickolite said although Vick is currently residing at his parents' home in Chicago, he will continue receiving treatments on his knee from physical therapists when he returns to Lincoln. At that time, Nickolite said, Ne braska basketball officials will be able to say more about Vick's future status. "It's going to be a situation where it is day by day," Nickolite said. Neither Nebraska basketball coach Danny Nee or any of his assistant coaches could be reached for com ment Monday. Earlier, Husker assistant coach Gary Bargen had echoed Nickolite's thoughts saying the Nebraska coach ing staff wasn't expecting any type of serious problems to result from the injury. "It's just a bump," Bargen said. He then refused to elaborate. Vick spent his last two seasons at Hutchinson Junior College, where he averaged 11.9 points and 7.5 rebounds per game for the Dragons. He was also named to the national junior college all tournament team as a sophomore.
