Coleman to stay at Kansas State
By The Associated Press
Norris Coleman, after visiting five of
the top basketball programs in the
nation where he could have played at
once, will remain at Kansas State and
sit out a year, it was announced Mon
day. A 24-year-old Army veteran, Coleman
led the nation's first-year players with
more than 20 points a game as a K
State freshman. The NCAA ruled him
ineligible in late February over a tech
nicality from his high school transcript
of 1979.
After K-State lost an appeal, Cole
man visited Maryland, Virginia, Jack
sonville, LSU and Kentucky. It was
widely assumed the 6-foot-8 forward
would transfer rather than stay at Kan
sas State and not play for a year.
"It's good news. It's great news,"
Kansas State Coach Lon Kruger told
The Associated Press from his office in
Manhattan, Kan. "I believe this speaks
very well indeed for Norris and for Kan
sas State University."
Coleman, the Big Eight newcomer of
the year, could not be reached, but
issued a statement through the office
of his attorney, Jeff Schemmel, in Top
eka, Kan.
"I have spent a lot of time in the last
30 days looking at the options that are
available to me in light of the NCAA's
ruling concerning my eligibility," he
said.
