But the benefits of working for a major-league baseball team far out weigh the fact that his body remains untanned, Pool said. "Being indoors, I just don't see the sun," he said. "It's great to be here, though. Even after 50 games, I still blink and ask myself if I'm really here." Pool said that the Astros' system of sharing the public relations duties among two individuals has worked out extremely well. Last fall, Houston general manager Dick Wagner elected to hire Pool and former Wichita State sports information assistant Rob Matwick to handle the Astro's media needs. Although the dual system was set up in hopes that neither Pool nor Matwick would have to work an enormous number of hours, Pool still finds himself working over 15 hours a day on game days. "It's a grind," he said. Pool said that he really hasn't noticed much difference between the athletes he used to deal with at Nebraska and the professional athletes he now works with. Coming into his job with the Astros, Pool said that he tempered his expecta tions to expect the worst from the baseball players he would have to be dealing with. But once he arrived and got settled into his office in the Astrodome, Pool said that he found that professional baseball players don't have any type of ego problems. "Most of the time they are real easy to get along with," he said. Pool said that while traveling with the players, he is often reminded of his five-year stint with the Nebraska sports information department. During a recent road trip to Chicago and St. 'Louis, Pool said the bus on which he was riding reminded him of the days when he traveled with the Nebraska baseball team. The only difference between the buses was that while traveling with the Astros, Pool spoke with assistant coach Yogi Berra. When he traveled with the Cornhuskers, Pool spoke mainly with Husker coach John Sanders. The Husker sports information de partment still includes him on their mailing list, and Pool was fortunate enough to tune in the Nebraska Montana State basketball game to hear former Husker center Dave Hoppen become the Cornhusker's all-time lead ing scorer. "It used to be that I had a general idea of who all the players were," he said. "But starting with this year's recruiting class, I won't have a chance to meet the players. I won't be as close to the athletic program at Nebraska as I used to be, but it's not like I am divorcing it since I will always consider Nebraska my home."
