Friday, May 2, 1986 Ex-candidate apologizes Daily Nebraskan Page 5 :ereotvpes wroo Editor's Note: This column is an apology from Steve Henning, Party party vice presidential candidate, for soliciting students to mark "Native American" on the ASUN ballot. The IINL stu dent court required Henning to submit an apology in the form of a guest opinion, a letter to the Native American Student Assoc iation and give five hours of service to Multi-Cultural Affairs. A great inequity took place during the recent ASUN election, for which a group of innocent Native Americans suffered much pain and embarrassment. Guest Opinion This inequity dealt with the demo graphic question on the ASUN ballot. A tol al of 1 :38 voters ident ified t hemselves as Native American, of which only 49 students are officially listed at UNL as being Native American. I learned a great deal from this incident, as innocent as it may seem, and I deeply regret that this lesson had to be learned at someone else's ex pense. Lakota Harden, a Native American student in her first semester at UNL, testified at the UNL student court hearing. The specifics of her testimony I don't have, but her point was valid. She expressed a difficulty in actually coming to campus and going to classes. She said when she walked down a street, people saw an Indian first and rapidly identified her as a minority student. Also, she said, the stereotype people have in their minds of Native Americans is negative and set in stone. I found Harden a delightful indivi dual, with much character and person ality. That she and other minority students feel that much effort and "tough skin" are requisites for attend ance at UNL is not only regrettable, but deplorable. Each student at the university should make an effort to welcome and embrace these people, regardless of their race. Stereotyping people of special interest groups is unfortunate. Students need to be aware and sensitive to people's origins, realizing we are all the same. God created everyone equal, and some times we forget that. The first step in the resolution of racial insensitivity lies with awareness of the problem. I hope that each of us can try to accept and appreciate the unique differences in all individuals. I believe that this awareness and appre ciation can add a greater degree of educational fulfillment. ASUN can be a very valuable body, one that can work progressively toward a better campus, I hope that minority students can discover the vast array of opportunities for involvement through our student government. And to Harden: I wish you a happy and exciting four years at NU. Stephen Henning senior business STRAIGHT TALK ABOUT SEXUALITY, 7 ...AND ITS CONFIDENTIAL. The more popular Reagan is, the more people will be outraged by what they see as Deaver's exploitation of him. The law is important and Deaver's alleged violation of it is worth the time and attention of the news media. And maybe Deaver personifies something about Washington that is worth being concerned about the role of money. But Washington is really out to get Michael K. Deaver for reasons that make this still a town not that different than most others in America: The town is simply disgusted. 1986, Washington Post Writers Group Cohen writes an editorial column for the Washington Post. .V'.- : ".J "... shades from thingsville . . . .... a real lifesaver Centrum 475-1655 lingsville Gateway 466-4488 NO BET!
