Delivery business plans
to resume service in fall
By Andy Pollock
Staff Reporter
Despite a small decline in business,
Goldentoes fast-food delivery service
continues to do well and will operate
again next fall.
Jay Wilkinson, owner and manager of
Goldentoes, said that because business
has slacked off, Goldentoes now only
delivers on Sundays.
"During the weekdays we were
breaking even, but that's it," Wilkinson
said. "Sundays have always been very
good, and since last week we decided
to deliver only on Sundays."
Wilkinson said he hasn't lost any
money by cutting the weekday service.
Everything simply is shut down on
weekdays and no money is spent, he
said.
Wilkinson said his Sunday business
is good because neither the residence
halls nor the Greek houses serve Sun
day. Goldentoes answers more than 70
calls on a typical Sunday, he said.
Wilkinson said he also cut service
because he is reaching other business
possibilities and because he is trying
to build a reserve so he can advertise
Goldentoes extensively next fall.
"We are going to make sure that we
hit the freshman class hard next fall,"
he said.
The business has been a tremendous
learning experience, he said, and has
helped him make business contacts.
"We've had surprisingly few prob
lems," he said. The biggest one was
when the national headquarters of
another food delivery service contacted
him and said they would take legal
action against him if Goldentoes con
tinued using a slogan that resembled
theirs, Wilkinson said.
Wilkinson said Goldentoes began
using the slogan, "One call really does
it all," before the other service had a
trademark for it.
"Once they got the trademark, the
national headquarters called me," he
said. "It scared me at first, but we
discontinued its use and haven't had
any further problems."
