Rep. Jim Slattery, D-Kan., an oppo nent of Contra aid a recipient of the letter, said Thursday, "I think it creates a historic opportunity for us to end the Contra war." Rep. Jim Leach, R-Iowa, also a foe Duchess of Windsor dead at 89 PARIS - The Duchess of Windsor, SO, the American divor cee for whom King Kdward VIII gave up the British throne, died Thursday at her home near Paris. The duchess had been in frail health and confined to her home for eight years. Sources who spoke on condition of anonymity said she died of bronchial pneumonia. Her death was announced in London by Buckingham Palace. The palace announcement said the duchess will be buried at Windsor Castle's Frogmore Gar den next to her husband, who died in 1972. Buckingham Palace said a funeral will be held Tuesday at the castle and will be private "in accordance with the wishes of the duke and duchess." Setting it Straight In an article titled, "Report says UNL faculty pay among lowest in Big Eight" (Daily Nebraskan, April 24), the following statements were incorrectly attributed: "College professors are more tolerant of low pay than members of other professions because of loyalty to the institution or family ties in the state. There is no simple solution. The university has been doing a better job of 'squeezing' money out of certain areas, but there is no longer any 'fat' in the university. What we really need is increased state support." The article implied that English professor Linda Pratt made the state ments, but they actually were made by Susan Welch, president of the UNL chapter of AAUP.
