CSU's Coleman given options
plans to appeal NCAA ruling
By The Associated Press
MANHATTAN, Kan. If Norris Coleman
wants to continue playing basketball at Kansas
State, only two options appear to be open to him.
He could sit out a year and not receive any
financial assistance, then resume his Kansas
State career in the 1987-88 season, in accor
dance with a ruling Tuesday by the NCAA Eligi
bility Committee.
Or he could win an appeal of the ruling which,
in effect, penalized Kansas State for the games
in which the high-scoring forward played last
year.
The Eligibility Committee ruled that Coleman
cannot play for the Wildcats or accept financial
aid from Kansas State until Feb. 27, 1987, the
school announced.
As explained by Kansas State, however, the
NCAA's ruling leaves Coleman free to transfer to
any other Division I school and become imme
diately eligible to play and receive financial
assistance.
The NCAA refused to discuss its ruling or even
confirm the school's statement, referring all
inquiries to Kansas State.
Coleman, the highest-scoring first-year player
in the nation last season, was declared ineligible
by Kansas State on Feb. 27, 1986, after another
NCAA committee ruled that he did not have the
required 2.000 cumulative grade point when- he
was graduated from high school in Jacksonville,
Fla., in 1979.
Coleman, voted first-team all-Big Eight and
the league's newcomer of the year by'The Asso
ciated Press, said Tuesday he would appeal the
ruling.
"I am very disappointed with the ruling,"
Coleman said in a statement issued by Kansas
State. ''1 am very happy at Kansas State and
would like to have the opportunity to finish my
collegiate eligibility here. Therefore, I do plan on
taking the necessary steps to appeal the ruling."
The ruling Tuesday was by the Eligibility
Committee in a conference call originating from
NCAA headquarters in suburban Kansas City.
The next step in the appeals process would be to
the NCAA Council's sub-committee on eligibility.
"It's my understanding that if he redshirts
next year he would have three years of eligibility
leftj" said a Kansas State spokesman.
In effect, the NCAA penalized Kansas State
the' same portion of the season in which the
Wildcats used Coleman. The school said that in
order to receive financial aid at Kansas State
next season prior .to Feb. 27, 1987, Coleman will
have to make restitution for the aid he received
during the period while he competed without
being eligible.
"We. are extremely disappointed with the
Eligibility Committee's ruling," said Larry Tra
vis, Kansas State athletic director. "We felt that,
from the beginning, Kansas State has been above
. repiroach in its handling of this situation. We feel
"the. ruling passed down is not in the best inter:
ests of the student-athlete involved and is a
.harsh penalty for the Kansas State basketball
program and the university."
Coleman led Kansas State with 21.8 points per
game and averaged more than eight rebounds.
