Dixon also said that another Corman
film, "Wild Angels" won at the Cannes
Film Festival.
Corman's main concern in recent
years has been to produce and distribute
a variety of films. Aside from such
drive-in fodder as "Grand Theft Auto,"
and "Piranha," Corman, through his
film production company, New World
Pictures, financed half the budget for
Ingmar Bergman's "Cries and
Whispers."
Dixon said all the major film com
panies turned down the project so, in
desperation, Bergman took the idea to
New World. This was Corman's first
attempt at "art" theatre fare and it
became the biggest grossing film in
Bergman's career (displaced recently
by "Fannie and Alexander").
"Corman managed to dispel the
myth that art films are inherently
commercial disasters," Dixon said.
After the success of "Cries and
Whispers," Corman went on to produce
Fellini's "Amarcord" and Volker
Schlondorff s Academy Award Winning
"The Tin Drum."
Corman rarely accepts invitations to
speak in public, said Dixon, who drafted
a letter to Corman inviting him to be a
part of the retrospective. Dixon also
requested the use of Corman's own
personal. copies of the films. Dixon
cited Sheldon's use of excellent union
projectionists, the good booth and
screening facilities, to encourage a
positive response.

35mm except "Masque of the Red
Death" and "Machine Gun Kelly" which
are on 16mm stock. The 35mm copy of
"The Intruder" is the only one in
existence.
The films will be shown as follows.
Thursday at 3 p.m., "Machine Gun
Kelly," followed by "Little Shop of Hor
rors" at 7 p.m. "The Pit and the Pendu
lum" concludes that evening's show
ings at 9 p.m.
Friday at 3 p.m. "The Intruder,"
followed by "Masque of the Red Death"
at 7 p.m. and "Machine Gun Kelly" at 9
p.m.
Saturday is "Little Shop of Hor
rors" at 1 p.m., "Cries and Whispers" at
3 p.m. and again at 7:30. Corman will
speak and answer questions after this
showing.
Sunday "Pit and the Pendulum" at
3 p.m., "Masque of the Red Death" at 5
p.m., "The Intruder" at 7 p.m. and
"Cries and Whispers" concludes the
retrospective at 9 p.m.
Admission to each film is $3.75,
$2.50 for senior citizens, children and
Friends of the Sheldon Film Theatre.
