Tuck
Professor
selected for
design award
George Tuck, UNL professor of jour
nalism, has been selected to partici
pate in a newspaper design and gra
phics seminar, June 8 through 14 in St.
Petersburg, Fla.
The Poynter Institute for Media Stu
dies Institute fellowships, which honor
top teachers in graphics and news
paper design techniques, were awarded
to 13 professors in the U.S.
"They polled the country and picked
the best graphics people (for the
award)" said R. Neale Coppe, dean of
the College of Journalism. "It's a nice
honor for George. He wanted very much
to go."
Tuck said he was excited about the
chance to swap information with other
top graphics professors.
"It's a chance to find out what you're
teaching should be taught," he said.
"It will give me a chance to talk to
other professors, share ideas and pick
jp current research (in the graphics
field)."
"Judges were impressed by the qual
ity of applicants in all our fellowship
programs this year," said Dr. Mario
Garcia, director of the institute's gra
phics and design center.
Copple said the people picked for
the fellowships were the top of the
field. The information Tuck could bring
back to UNL would advance the col
lege, he said.
The institute selects college profes
sors of graphics and design, to journal
ism instructors who act as advisers at
junior or community colleges, and to
college seniors interested in careers as
newspaper designers.
