WICHITA, Kan. Wichita State used
the strength of a pair of sixth-inning
home runs to post a 6-5 victory- against
Nebraska Thursday night.
The Cornhuskers, now 25-11, took
advantage of the early control prob
lems (' Shocker pitcher Tom Julian to
stake themselves to an early 5-0 lead.
We didn't get timely hitting,"
SYbraska Coach John Sanders said.
Out hitting was spotty."
"You are really vulnerable when you
leave runners on to a team coming
back," Sanders said. "But we'll im
prove on that tomorrow night (when
Nebraska plays Oklahoma in Norman.)"
Shortstop Larry Mims got things
started in the first for Nebraska when
he singled and took second on a walk to
Todd Bunge.
Consecutive walks to Rich King and
Mark Kister then scored Mims and Burt
Beattie followed with his 20th double
of the season. Beat tie's hit scored
Bunge and King.
Jeff Taylor then singled off Wichita
State reliever Mark Behny to score
Beattie and close out the seining in the
first inning.

contests
decide top rank
The Nebraska women's Softball team
faces Iowa State and Kansas this
weekend in Lincoln to decide the top
seed going into the Big Eight
Championship tournament, next
month.
Coach Wayne Daigle said the Big
Eight Round Robin Tournament Sat
urday and Sunday is "extremely
important" for the Cornhuskers.
"This tournament will decide who
the top seed will be in the Big Eight
Tournament," Daigle said. "The top
seed will get a bye, and that's just like a
win."
The Buskers can claim the No. 1
seed for the post-season tournament
with a pair of wins against Kansas or
any combination of three wins against
the Jayhawks or Iowa State.
This year's Big Eight tournament
will be in St. Joseph, Mo., May 2 to 4.
Daigle said both Kansas and Iowa
State have "solid" teams.
"Iowa State just split with Creigh
t on, who's ranked No. 10 in the nat ion,"
Daigle said. "When you split with the
tenth-ranked team in the country,
you're doing something right. Kansas is
rated No. 6 in the nation, and they have
their whole team returning from last
year. They have a lot of experience."
Nebraska will play Iowa State at 2
p.m. Saturday, then face Kansas at 4
p.m. A tentatively scheduled game
against Kansas State Friday has been
canceled.
Greeks duke it out
for learning disabled
What has 20 eyes, 20 legs, 20 arms
and fights for charity?
If you said Larry Holmes, you're
wrong. It's the 16th Annual Sigma Chi
All-Greek Fight Night, and it's tonight
at the State Fairgrounds Agriculture
Hall.
Tim Stover, co-chairman of the event,
said the fights are conducted under
American Boxing Federation rules with
three two-minute rounds.
There are no weight classes in the
usual sense. Instead, fighters are
grouped by their approximate weights.
"It's always been very evenly match
ed," Stover said. "We don't match an
experienced fighter with an inexpe
rienced fighter. We're not out to get
anyone hurt."
Stover said the level of experience
among the fighters varies.
"One guy, Jim Lovely, an ATO, fought
last year and some of the other guys
have had boxing club experience," he
said.
The boxers train on their own for the
fights, Stover said. Some also train with
the UNL Boxing Club.
"We try to let them know about a
month before Christmas," Stover said.
"Some of them start training then.
Others wait until about a month be
fore." The event benefits the Wallace Vil
lage for Children in Colorado, a school
for learning disabled children. It has
drawn about 2,000 people in past years,
Stover said.
Tickets for the 7:30 p.m. event can
be bought today at the Sigma Chi
house, 1510 Vine St., for $3.50. They will
be $4 at the door.
Wichita State managed to cut the
Busker's lead to 5-1 in the bottom of
the first inning when they capitalized
on three walks issued by Nebraska
pitcher Phil Lieberher.
Lieberher, who walked eight
Shockers in 5 23 innings, started the
inning by walking both Kent Headley
and Amie Beyeler. Following a fielder's
choice that advanced Hadley to third,
Lieberher issued his third walk of the
inning to Mark Standiford.
Dan Rayley hit a ground ball to score
Headley from third base.
Wichita State then added single
runs in both the third and fifth inning.
In the decisive sixth inning, the 28
10 Shockers used a pair of home runs
by Headley and Standiford to post the
come from behind victory.
