"Look at Charlie Sexton," Scott interrupts (they have a tendency to lalk all at once when they like what they're talking about). "Here's a hot young blues guitarist and his record 'company turned him into David Howie." "The Blasters are a laughingstock at their record company. . ." Tom breaks in, One pictures The Blasters in duck tails and leather filing through the endless rows of perfectly straight desks, perms, izods and word processors at Warner Records. . . "And the Stray Cats," Dave con tinues, "The guitarist's great and the music was inspirational but the mar keting of the band ruined this music," Dave says. "Made everything bigger than life and all too slick." "Our amplifier and guitar are older i ban all of us and Scott's drums are (tlder than our Dads," Dave says, gob bling a fork full of something only a man with road fever would eat. "We recorded our first single, 'Dou ble Datin' in a 3 track studio, on the same boards used to record Nancy Sinatra's 'These Boots are Made for Walkin' and a bunch of Duane Eddy stuff," Dave said. let's talk about the road, what makes you guys look that way, how do you .survive it, where's home. . . "The road's a part of the music. The 12 hour drives through cornfields, eat ing gumbo at Lake Charles, blizzards, storms and dust, . ." Scott's married ("I don't look at chicks on the road. I look at my ride cymbal."). Dave's close to being mar ried. Tom's known as "Playboyo Bio nico." At the Zoo he says he was a little interested in a woman who looked like Billy Zoom's (X's ex-guitarist) sister. The Paladins have found a home in Austin, and a following. Austin, the "place to be" musically, the new mecca of true-blue American music: the blues, zydeco, R&B, swamp rock and cow punk. . . Kim Wilson, of the Fabulous T Birds, is producing The Paladins' first LI at Willie Nelson's $o million studio in Entertainment Letters It appears obvious that Lieurance does not have the faintest idea of what country music has done for John Sch neider lately. Schneider is no longer associated exclusively with "The Dukes of Hazard." This is not Schneider's first album either, although Lieurance im plies that it is with his statement, " 'Dukes of Hazard' star makes album." Schneider has been successful in country music for two years and he is definitely not riding on past TV popu larity to sell his music. Furthermore the demographic ex amples that Lieurance cites are an insult t o the country music buying pub lic as a whole. Does Lieurance really think that exposing a 12-year-old who is buying this album to the Ramones is going to change his or her mind? I believe that, unlike Lieurance, the 12-year-old may want to be able to under stand the words to the music he is listening to. The 12-year-old wet brains probably has a deeper appreciation for music that allows the artist to express himself without the blast of trash that accompanies Lieurance's favorably re viewed material. Finally I would question the credi bility of anyone who would review an album and even write the review after listening to only half of the album. I enjoy all of this album as well as many other country albums. My final word to Lieurance and the Daily Nebraskan are that if you do not like country music in the first place, and will not even listen to the entire album, then you should not use the record review column to Thursday, April 17, 1986 ( ill '' " fl ' 1 For Spring Fever Symptoms GET VOUR UfJS IN HERE!!! it mn it Bre it z?i dthir yuianbsl IcMlar Family 821 S. But The Paladins aren't complaining. tiJxzxxixxxxixxrxxii-iJLn UNL Dance 'We're all in our favorite band and pretty happy with our lives," Dave says. The Paladins will hit the Zoo again next week, Thursday through Saturday. They are a band in the finest sense of the word. Three guys so happy with where they are that any motion up and out is just rock V roll fluke. How do you market a band that would stare a corporate cameraman into a hole?
