Group takes music to Ihe street
Enter it into Oxford's Anthology of
Maxims that when the band calls the
sidewalk its stage, all pedestrians
become part of the show. Better yet,
call it truth when the Lampshades
are the band.
That good, really? Well. , .maybe not,
but you'd be surprised how far a trio
caped in party hats can go.
It was from a distance of two blocks
that I first saw the crowd last Saturday
night on the corner of 12th and Q
streets, making me wonder how much
blood somebody must have lost to
attract such a gathering. I was reminded
of the throng I once saw in New York
City surrounding one guy as he swung a
lead pipe at another.
It wasn't long after I left these fears
behind and walked within hearing
range of the Lampshades that all the
good memories I had of New York came
to surface. The warm memories I had of
San Francisco, Kansas City, Baltimore,
Washington and Omaha then drifted in.
In every one of these cities people are
likely to derive as much pleasure from
the live entertainment they stumble
upon on the streets as from any place
those roads might lead to. With the
exception of Daniel Newton on guitar,
the only music I've ever heard in the
streets of Lincoln has come from a
silver bell jingling Santa outside of the
NBC bank.
Ted and Wally's should be thanked
for the electricity it provided the
Lampshades, via the extension cord
that snaked its way 40 feet to the
corner.
It seems that with the absence of
walls and a ceiling confining the band
and its audience, there was as well an
absence of any inhibition restraining
the participatory inclinations of the
crowd. Between songs, one of the band
members did some juggling with three
members of the congregation, using
pins he seemed to pull out of nowhere.
When the pedestrians-turned-jugglers
showed their hands to be feeble, which
we all expected, the musician barked
at them in the scornful manner only a
performer could get away with.
Back and forth, the band shifted
from playing some fairly catchy origi
nals to humorous remakes of other
artists' songs, joking amongst them
selves and with members of the crowd.
This they did at times without the aid
of the microphone, thereby nurturing
the performerspectator relationship.
As for those pedestrians who dared
to tread between the assemblage of 60
and the three men they came to see,
they found themselves being lyrically
taunted with lines such as "there she
goes, just a wal kin' down the street. . ."
as initiated by the band and sustained
by the crowd. One sauntering couple
was given immediately to the giggles
and didn't recover until they had put
100 paces behind them.
I think my greatest joy, however,
came from all those driving by who
honked in approval. Most horn pushers
I ever encounter end up giving me some
obscene gestures.
So when do you get to see the
Shades? Lampshade Dave Sullivan says
the flyers will go up sometime this
week, stating the date, time and place.
There will be no charge at the door
because there won't be any door.
