Preoccupation with force dictates policy

fighting their co religionists, and, in
particular, a leader such as Qaddafi,
whose anti-Israel credentials are
hardly in dispute. A combination of
poverty, religious extremism and
anti-Americanism could produce a
fifth column. Even if the Mubarak
regime survived, it might find itself
once again isolated in the Arab
world. Would it then be forced to
assert its pan-Arab bona fides by
repudiat ing the peace with Israel?
The U.S. plan for a joint operation
might have made military sense
but that's about it. It was drawn up
in a strategic vacuum as if short
term gains were everything and
nothing mattered but what the Army
likes to call "the mission." The rea
son it is worth citing is that it is

Birth control is responsible action for
In response to Mark Maresh's letter
(Daily Nebraskan, April 14):
The decision whether to engage in
sexual activity is a decision for indi
viduals and their partners. The choice
to use birth control is a responsible
action used for the prevention of an
unwanted pregnancy.
Maresh wrote that "basically what is
being said between a couple who uses a
form of birth control is, 'I love you,
except for your fertility.' " That isn't
true.
The couple who chooses birth con
trol, whether married or not, is saying
that if and when they choose to have a
child it will be wanted and planned,

Whatever happened to'the law abid
ing citizen? or even respect for others'
property?
Almost every day I see police reports
of hit-and-run accidents in university
parking lots, and I wonder what kind of
person could damage another person's
car and just drive away.
Recently I found out first hand. My
mint-condition 1969 MGB was the vic
similar to other recent Reagan
administration actions in which
legitimate questions were brushed
aside in a rush to use force in the
name of the Reagan Doctrine.
For example, is it worth allying
ourselves with Jonas Savimbi in
Angola since he himself is allied
with the racist regime in South
Africa? Is it worth giving Savimbi
stinger missiles if the Soviets and
the Cubans respond by giving their
Angolan allies even more sophisti
cated weapons? Is it worth supply
ing the same stingers to the Afghan
guerrillas and risk them turning
them over to other Moslem zealots
whose enemy is not t he Soviet Union
but the United States or Israel?
You could ask similar questions
about Nicaragua: What happens after
the Contras are trained and ready to
really fight? How lengthy a war will
not a "mistake" that they would be
unprepared for mentally, emotionally
and economically.
Maresh also says he fails "to see how
the pill or any other form of contracep
tion lets humans 'be fruitful and mul
tiply.' " Sexual activity is more than an
act of reproduction. It is a sign of your
love and caring for one another. Birth
control gives a couple the time to pre
pare for a child, so that when they do
"multiply," the choice will be theirs,
not something that "just happened."
Maresh also says that "there is only
one form (of birth control) that is 100
percent effective (as opposed to the
pill's 99 percent effectiveness) and
tim of a hit and run. More then $800
worth of damage was done to the front
end.
Maybe I expect too much, but I
actually did expect to find a note in my
car from the person who backed into
me, or at least from someone who wit
nessed the accident. But, whoever hit
me must have had more important
things on his mind than the law, or

soldiers have to? Is Nicaragua that
important, and maybe more impor
tant, can such a war ever be won?
Will the hills forever belong to the
guerrillas?
The answers to these questions
are not only not forthcoming, it's
not clear they are even being asked.
Complex problems are given to the
military to simplify, and courses are
charted that will take years to
change.
A short-term "September Song"
mentality has seized the adminis
tration. In foreign policy, it's no
longer morning again in America.

That may be true, but that also is his
argument against pre-marital sex. The
decision whether to have sex is a deci
sion each of us is faced with at one time
or another.
I am not saying pre-marital sex is
good or bad, only that I am glad I am
part of a campus that offers students
the pathway to responsibility for their
actions and doesn't pass moral judg
ment on such a decision, an example
that all of us should note.

initiative if they want to work on a
campaign, Savage said. The Young Demo
crats give interested students names
and telephone numbers of campaign
managers, she said, but the executive
officer will not work as a group for one
candidate.
"In the general election, that will
change," said Savage, who supports
former Lincoln Mayor Helen Boosalis
for governor. "We will provide more
direct support for our candidates, but
that cannot happen during a primary."
Brent Toalson. UNL manager for
former Lincoln Sen. Chris Beutler's
campaign, said he has freedom to
announce his group's activities during
Young Democrats meetings. Most of
the help "Students for Beutler" get, he
said, comes from Beutler's statewide
campaign rather than the YDs.
The College Republicans supply stu
dent campaigners with membership
lists and contacts in chapters at other
colleges, Pigg said. Most of the state
wide leaders of the college campaigns,
he said, come from UNL's chapter.
"That speaks well for all of us
because it shows we're capable of
doing something on a grander scale,"
he said.
The Nebraska Republican Party has
been more helpful to State Treasurer
Kay Orr's campaign than the College
Republicans, said Chris Gunderson,

"I'm sure it didn't hurt that she was
a regent," he said.

porter on the College Republicans'
executive committee, Pigg said. But
about 80 percent of the membership of
UNL's Republican chapter is working
with Orr's campaign, Gunderson said.

primary, said John Hilgert, who joined
the group last year after two years with
the College Republicans. Hilgert sup
ports Norfolk's David Domina.
