The Lincoln Red Cross will walk
April 19 to raise money for the local
chapter, said Steve Lewis, public rela
tions director.
Lewis said students are welcome to
get involved in the 9 12-mile walka
thon. Walkers will start at the chap
ter's headquarters at 17th and E streets,
walk out to Holmes Lake, then back to
the headquarters. The group hopes to
raise $10,000.
Lewis said he wants to get students
involved because the walkathon will be
fun, not because they have a lot of
money
The top prize for those 18 and older
who raise the most money is free lodg
ing for two nights for two people in the
Crown Center in Kansas City.
A color TV will be given to the person
younger than 18 who raises the most
money. A K-Mart memory telephone
will go to the walker under 18 who
raises the second largest amount, Lewis
said.
Lewis said there will be several
celebrities in the walkathon, includ
ing Lincoln Sen. Don Wesley and Lan
caster County Commissioner Mike
Johanns, Lewis said. Also, Lewis said,
ABC-TV promised the mini-series "Amer
ika," now being filmed in Tecumseh,
would send the show's producer Dick
O'Conner, co-produced John Lugar and
actor Ford Reiney.
Last year Scott Young, morning an
nouncer for KFOR, collected $600 in
pledges, the most of anyone, Lewis
said. Young will be back this year,
Lewis said.
When walkers arrive at Holmes Lake,
they will be served soft drinks. After
it's all over, walkers will be given hot
dogs, chips and Cokes, Lewis said.
Pledge sheets can be picked up at
the Red Cross chapter house, 17th and
E streets, or at any Lincoln fire station,
Lewis said. For more information, call
475-5581.
