The Nebraska Department of Motor
Vehicles will form a prestige plate
review committee to decide which
plates are obscene or objectional.
The committee will be selected this
Of the 9,331 prestige plates issued

The 169 prestige plates owned by
UNL students range from displays of
the owner's name or initials to descrip
tions such as "SO COOL," "H20 SKI,"
and "LUDE 2."
If any of the plates are deemed ob
scene or objectionable by the review
committee, the owners can attend a
June 1 meeting to explain why they
want their plate.
The recent controversy began when
one man refused to relinguish his "RED
PIG" plate. Ken Frerichs, president of
the state bank of Hildreth, Nebr., said
he would not return his plate until
officials proved to him that "RED PIG"
"We are required to screen out
plates that are obscene or objection
able," said Holly Jensen, Director of
the NDMV. "We're doing this to make
sure we have a good system and we
aren't offending anybody.
"But quite frankly, it's a no-win
situation. It's a gray area. What's objec
tionable to one person may not be
objectionable to another," she said.
To ensure fairness, the review com
mittee will represent a cross-section of
Nebraskans. The seven-member com
mittee will include a law enforcement
office, a journalist, a citizen-at-large,
an English professor, a legislator, a
sociologist and a clergy member.
"We are receiving letters every day
(from applicants)," Jensen said.
After the committee members are
chosen, they will review all the prestige
plates in Nebraska and decide which
are obscene or objectionable.
Plates with more than three numer
als or two or more characters that are
so similar they can confuse police
officers also will be recalled.
After the initial recall review on
June 1, the committee will continue to
review plates by request, Jensen said.

Bell said the-scenario depicted in
the letter is accurate.
Although he did not specifically
name Love Library, Bell said sexual
misbehavior in restrooms "goes on
across the state" and is the result of
gay and heterosexual people trying to
meet others while hiding their sexual
He said he discourages such con
duct at GLSA meetings because it gives
the community a negative view of gays.
"It's more than an improper way to
meet people, it makes it more likely to
spread AIDS," Bell said.
Bell said he encourages people to
find alternate ways to meet people that
are "safer, cleaner and a lot healthier."
The only solution to the problem
Would be a change in society's attitude
toward gay people, Bell said.
