The Nebraska baseball team beat
the Wayne State Wildcats, 21-1 Friday.
Nebraska now takes a 6-0 record into
its 10-day West Coast trip that opened
Sunday against Stetson. The loss
dropped the Wildcats to 1-13.
Nebraska scored eight runs with two
outs in the second inning. With Burt
Beattie on first, Jeff Taylor and John
Franklin hit consecutive singles to
drive Beattie in. Curtis Heflin loaded
the bases after he was hit by Steve
Robert's pitch. Roberts threw a wild
pitch, advancing the runners and allow
ing Taylor to score. Larry Mims tripled,
scoring Franklin and Heflin, and scored
on a balk by Roberts. With the bases
empty, Todd Bunge drew a walk and
stole second. He took third on an error
by the catcher. Bunge crossed the plate
on another Robert's wild pitch. Meyers
followed with a walk and stole second
and third, scoring on a towering Rich
King homer to left. The Wildcats
brought in relief pitcher Jeff Rothrock
for Roberts. Kister promptly singled up
the middle, but was forced at second
on Bettie's grounder to short.
In the third, Nebraska added to its
lead by scoring three runs. Taylor
walked and Franklin singled. Both
scored on a double by Mims.
Mims took third on an error by the
pitcher. Mims scored on Bunge's sacri
fice fly to deep right-center field.
Wayne State got its only run in the
fifth on a walk and two singles.
In the bottom of the inning, Bunge
slammed a solo homer to give Nebraska
a 12-1 lead.
Nebraska added five runs in the
sixth and four more in the seventh to
end the scoring.
Nebraska used six pitchers to limit
the Wildcats to one run on three hits
and five walks. Nebraska struck out 14.
Rocky Johnson, now 10, was cre
dited with the win. Johnson pitched
two innings and gave up one hit and
struck out two.
Steve Roberts took the loss for
Wayne State.
Brian Newton leads Nebraska in hit
ting with a .533 average. Bunge leads
the team in homers with three and
Meyers in RBFs with 13.
Phil Harrison leads the team in wins
with two, and in strike outs with 14.
Harrison is one of four pitchers with a
0.00 Earned Run Average.

By Kristi Reetz
Staff Reporter
The Nebraska women gymnasts
closed out their 1 986 home schedule by
blasting Missouri with a score of 182.55
176.10. The Huskers took a 46.55-45.75
lead on the first event, the vault, and
increased their lead on every event.
"We had our best meet this season
unt il the beam," said Nebraska women's
coach Rick Walton. "We had several
falls on beam. We did do a good job on
vault and floor exercise."
The all-around title for the meet
went to Nebraska freshman Jeaneane
Smith, who scored a personal and team
record 37.45. Smith scored a 9.45 on the
vault, a 9.50 on the uneven bars; 9.30 on
the balance beam; and 9.20 on the floor
exercise.
"I was happy with my performance
tonight," Smith said, "but I think I
could have done better on beam."
Even though she wasn't happy with
her performance on beam, Smith still
scored higher than anyone else and
took first on the event.
