Nebraska now takes a 6-0 record into its 10-day West Coast trip that opened Sunday against Stetson. The loss dropped the Wildcats to 1-13. Nebraska scored eight runs with two outs in the second inning. With Burt Beattie on first, Jeff Taylor and John Franklin hit consecutive singles to drive Beattie in. Curtis Heflin loaded the bases after he was hit by Steve Robert's pitch. Roberts threw a wild pitch, advancing the runners and allow ing Taylor to score. Larry Mims tripled, scoring Franklin and Heflin, and scored on a balk by Roberts. With the bases empty, Todd Bunge drew a walk and stole second. He took third on an error by the catcher. Bunge crossed the plate on another Robert's wild pitch. Meyers followed with a walk and stole second and third, scoring on a towering Rich King homer to left. The Wildcats brought in relief pitcher Jeff Rothrock for Roberts. Kister promptly singled up the middle, but was forced at second on Bettie's grounder to short. In the third, Nebraska added to its lead by scoring three runs. Taylor walked and Franklin singled. Both scored on a double by Mims. Mims took third on an error by the pitcher. Mims scored on Bunge's sacri fice fly to deep right-center field. Wayne State got its only run in the fifth on a walk and two singles. In the bottom of the inning, Bunge slammed a solo homer to give Nebraska a 12-1 lead. Nebraska added five runs in the sixth and four more in the seventh to end the scoring. Nebraska used six pitchers to limit the Wildcats to one run on three hits and five walks. Nebraska struck out 14. Rocky Johnson, now 10, was cre dited with the win. Johnson pitched two innings and gave up one hit and struck out two. Steve Roberts took the loss for Wayne State. Brian Newton leads Nebraska in hit ting with a .533 average. Bunge leads the team in homers with three and Meyers in RBFs with 13. Phil Harrison leads the team in wins with two, and in strike outs with 14. The Huskers took a 46.55-45.75 lead on the first event, the vault, and increased their lead on every event. "We had our best meet this season unt il the beam," said Nebraska women's coach Rick Walton. "We had several falls on beam. We did do a good job on vault and floor exercise." The all-around title for the meet went to Nebraska freshman Jeaneane Smith, who scored a personal and team record 37.45. Smith scored a 9.45 on the vault, a 9.50 on the uneven bars; 9.30 on the balance beam; and 9.20 on the floor exercise. "I was happy with my performance tonight," Smith said, "but I think I could have done better on beam." Even though she wasn't happy with her performance on beam, Smith still scored higher than anyone else and took first on the event.
