Theater Preview "Touching Bottom" will be the second performance in the theater's new location at 11109 K St., in the base ment of St. Mark's On-the-Campus. Both plays that comprise "Touching Hut torn" are stark and bittersweet , said Judith Kroeger, a director and actor in the plays. They also are cynical and verv funny, she said. the first play, "The Road," stars Jim Mct'abe and Brandee Dworksky. The play is non-realistic, said Kroeger, who is directing the play. By 1982, The Clash had a radio hit, "Rock the Casbah" and groups like The Talking Heads, X and the Boomtown Rats were getting strong radio and MTV play. Punk became salable. Fashion safety pins sold for big bucks in New York's chicest shops. Punk haircuts meant big money for hair salons. Punk was not only fashionable, it was a huge trend that managed to infiltrate re cording industry, fashion, food and even furniture. Punk as a critical label was applied to bands as diverse as REM and tears for Fears. The dictionary definition was slipping in favor of entrepreneurism. There was still a plethora of small bands, recording themselves in base ments and garages and any number of independent labels, but now there was money to be had. Warner Brothers Records swallowed up the Los Angeles punk recording mecca, Slash records (a label that recorded X, The Germs and Fear) and The Clash were million aires. A movement that started in the unemployment lines in 76 would be come big business in '86. "At this point, I don't use punk to describe anything in my reviews," Wolgamott says. "People get the wrong impression when they see that word. There are so many more precise words to describe the music happening today." At the Sex Pistols final show at San Francisco's Winterland in 1978, Johnny Rotten concluded the proceedings with the words: "Ever get the feeling you've been cheated? Goodnight." Sid died. Johnny Rotten went on to found an experimental disco band called Public Image Limited and a list of bands as big as the Lincoln phone book were never heard from again. Goodnight, it's 1986. Kroeger said this play borders on t he absurd. The play deals with an elder woman asking for forgiveness from God for a murder she committed. Wynhouscn started directing "Bap tismal" when Kroeger found it difficult to act and produce in the same play. This is Wynhausen's first time direct ing. Kroeger, a graduate directing stu dent, has previously directed "The Diary of Anne Frank," "Androcles and' the Lion" and "An 0. Henry Holiday." "Touching Bottom" was different to direct than the other plays, Kroeger said, because of fewer actors and no technical assistance. She said she had to be more self reliant.
