Intern fair
for services
planned today

College education helps students
move toward career goals, but job
experience and contacts may unlock a
full-time job after graduation, said Mil
lie Katz, coordinator of the Office of
Experiential Education.
Because of this, Katz said, many UNL
juniors and seniors get internships.
Several students landed internships
' through the education office, which
specializes in human services, Katz
said.
Today the office Is cosponsoring a
Human Services Internship and Prac
ticum Fair to help even more students
find internships.
The fair, which will be in the Ne
braska Union Centennial Room from 3
to 7 p.m., will give students the chance
to talk to employers from various human
service agencies, Katz said. The em
ployers will look for summer interns,
fall and spring semesters, she said.
"You can't get a job easily in the
human services sector without job
experience," Katz said. "We have over
50 agencies in the Lincoln area that
provide internships for students. They
are unpaid jobs, but they give the stu
dents the required job experience.

pate in UNL's internship program in
clude hospitals, medical service agen
cies, social services and counseling
services, Katz said.
All agencies accept students from a
wide range of majors, Katz said. For
example, she said, students in criminal
justice, psychology, social work, women's
studies and consumer science are jut
a few of the possible intern candidates.
Shannon Warburton, a senior psy
chology major, is interning this spring
with the Department of Corrections in
the diagnostic and evaluation unit.
Warburton said she got interested in
criminal justice offenders in the center
during the past six months.
Warburton said the two college cred
its and work experience are the main
benefits of the internship.
"The experience gives me an idea as
to what I'll be doing," she said. "The
internship has really strengthened my
ideas about getting into this field of
work."
Shirley Kuhle, administrator of the
victimwitness unit of the Lincoln
Police Department, said 15 interns and
vounteers work in her office each
semester.
"Without their help," she said, "we'd
never get everything done. There are
1,700 victims we help every year. Count
ing the office visits, telephone calls,
referrals and letters, we make 10,000
contacts per year with the victims."

Art Schlichter, former professional
football player, will answer questions
on gambling's effect on his life, and
psychiatrist Robert Custer will discuss
his work in treating compulsive
gamblers at a conference today at 6:30
p.m. in the Nebraska Union Ballroom.
