We once snorted Jack Daniels out of a spoon at this bar and the waitress and kitchen staff stood around and watched. They didn't kick us out. We love them. Bill: Chesterfield's manager once described the bar to me as a "date bar." This is an apt description. The atmosphere is such that most of us probably would like to someday have a house big enough to have a den that feels like Chesterfield's. The food here is excellent, espe cially the nachos, and their happy hour specials on beer make this one of the best after work or class gathering pla ces in Lincoln. Chesterfields deserves a hearty five kegs. Barrymore's, 124 N. 13th St. Bill: The atmosphere of this bar is incredible, but the drink prices usually find me half a block away at O'Rourke's. Barrymore's is a great place to take a date after a movie for a quiet intimate chat, Charles: The only way this bar could be better is if you could see the movie on the back of the Stuart Theater's screen. Instead, all you get is a white screen. The bathrooms are great. See picture on page 17. Five kegs. The Royal Grove, 340 West Cornhusker Highway. Charles: It used to be I wouldn't go into this bar unless I was armed and wearing an umpire's mask. Now, I guess its got a pool and all the "best" people go there. They still look like bikers to me. They just aren't wearing leather. I don't like the bar or the peo ple, but The Blasters and Joe "King" Carrasco play there, so... Bill: Charles is right, mostly. This bar is great when they have a great group playing. I saw John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band, The Verandas and BTO here. The Grove has the best stage in Lincoln. But I hate drinking beer out of plastic glasses. The Grove is a five-keg bar when a great group plays. The Sidetrack, 935 O St. Bill: Joyce Durand's bar was better when it really was beside the tracks, but now that it has moved to 0 Street it has lost some of its former appeal. Still, though, Joyce plays the piano some times, and you can sing along to great TV theme show songs. My favorite thing about the bar is the Sweet Potato Band, because they play Jimmy Buffett and Eagles songs for me. Charles: I've never been there. Reports are you have to drink out of plastic glasses and sit on multi-colored folding chairs. There'd have to be a real good band to make me do that and there isn't. Someday we'll talk about Jimmy Buffett, Bill... Five kegs See BARS on 18 Good for first and second drinks. So we decided it was our duty to also let you know where not to go. Don't trust me on this. We're biased and we admit it. We feel, however, that most college students would like to know about: The Five Worst Bars In Lincoln, Except... Sandy's, 1348 0 St.. .except on Friday afternoons. Sandy's is a "nothing special" bar, except for their great crowds on Friday after noons. The crowds are predominant ly Greek and women who wish they were. If you're Greek, or have friends who are, or just enjoy drink ing in a sardine-can atmosphere, this is t he place for you. Bill has had a couple of great FAC's there. The Brass Rail, 1436 0 St...ex cept Thursday nights if you're Greek. Every other day of the week the Brass Rail is lucky to attract flies, but for some unexplainable reason it has become another, yes, Greek tradition to fill the place on Thurs day nights. The Lucky Lady, 1033 0 St...ex cept when it's closed. Luckily, ladies, this bar is now closed. Unluckily, it has opened under new management and is now called Celebration. I haven't had sufficient reason to gather material for a comedy rou tine recently so I haven't been to Celebrat ion yet, but I assume it will have the same tawdry, plastic deco rations, the same top-40 music videos, and the same extremely high drink prices.
