Phi Delta Theta house 'uncommon, rare'
By Shari Pace
Staff Reporter
The Phi Delta Theta fraternity may
join the ranks of the George Washing
ton estate in Vermont and Lincoln's
Rogers House at 2145 B St.
The fraternity house, 1425 R St., has
passed the first step in becoming a
historic building listed in the National
Register of Historic Places.
Joni Gilkerson, architectural histo
rian for the Nebraska State Historical
Society, said the State Historic Preser
vation Board passed the nomination
Jan. 22. The nomination was forwarded
to the NRHP in Washington, she said.
Gilkerson said that once the NRHP.
receives a nomination, it has 45 work
ing days to comment on the nomination.
The fraternity's nomination was
written by Ed Zimmer, historic preser
vation planner for Lincoln. Zimmer
said the Phi Delta Theta House Associ-

will be listed as a national site, but it
will only be recognized locally, Zimmer
said.
Nonetheless, he said, "it gives tex
ture to the city. It adds urban charac
ter." If the NPHC approves the registra
tion, the fraternity would be the second
building on campus to be declared
national historical landmark. Archi
tectural Hall was registered as a his
toric building in 1975.
Lincoln's Stuart Building, 13th and
P streets, heads a list of 13 other
Nebraska properties nominated for
placement on the list.
Requests for National Register list
ing should be made in writing to the
