Bob Thornton, Nebraska's defensive
secondary football coach, announced
his resignation Saturday in Lincoln.
Thornton, who started at safety for
Bob Devaney in 1972 and for Tom
Osborne in 1973, said he is leaving his
coaching job to pursue private busi
ness opportunities.
"I've considered it for some time,"
Thornton said.
Thornton said he has two, possibly
three different offers, including one in
Wyoming, but he declined to specify
what they are.
"I don't really want to mention any
names at this point because I still have
some things to look into," Thornton
said.
Members of Nebraska's defensive
secondary expressed surprise at
Thornton's resignation.
"1 had no idea he was leaving," jun
ior cornerback Mike Carl said. "It
really came as a shock to me. I'm very
disappointed that he's leaving. I really
liked him."
Other players also were surprised at
Thornton's decision to resign. Fresh
man defensive back Marvin Sanders
said he had heard rumors in the locker
room all week, but didn't know whether
to believe them.
"I tried to talk to Coach Thornton
Wednesday, but nobody could tell me
where he was," Sanders said. "Then
Coach (Tom) Osborne told us in the
field house Friday afternoon. He didn't
want to make it sound like it was a big
thing."
Thornton came to Nebraska after
coaching at Nebraska Wesleyan, West
ern Illinois and Army. Before playing at
Nebraska in 1972 and 1973, Thornton
played at Harbor Junior College in Cali
fornia. After his Cornhusker career,
Thornton tried out with the NFL's
Washington Redskins.
Thornton said a major reason for his
retirement is his family. Thornton and
his wife, Kathy, have a daughter, Amy,
and a son, Aaron.
"I'd just like to spend more time
with them," he said.
Osborne said Sunday that he has no
one in particular in mind to replace
Thornton. He said the replacement will
come through the 'affirmative action
procedure, but he would not mention
specific names.
Carl said he is "a little concerned"
about who would be named to replace
Thornton.
"You never know what might happen,"
Carl said. "You might get someone in
there who will bring in new ideas and
maybe even change certain techniques.
