MKinm I irWn AMES, Iowa Nebraska women's basketball coach Kelly Hill said she can't figure it out. Despite a combined effort of 50 points by forward Maurtice Ivy and center Angie Miller, the Cornhuskers lost, 89-74, to Iowa State Saturday at the Hilton Coliseum. Hill said Nebraska's biggest prob lems in the game were the ones that have hampered the team throughout the season. "We got very, very, very impatient," Hill said. "We tried to make things happen and dug ourselves into a hole. We made some crucial defensive mis takes and lots of turnovers, and I don't know why. Maybe we're young, maybe they're not well-coached. I don't know what the problem seems to be, but we're making the same mental mis takes that we've been making all year. I'm really at a loss for why we continue to do the same kinds of things game in and game out." Nebraska led by as much as four late in the first half, but the Huskers trailed at halftime, 40-38. In the second half, however, the Cyclones outscored Neb raska 49-36 behind the 21 points by junior center Stephanie Smith and by the play of senior guard Jane Loben stein, who added 18 points. Iowa State also out-rebounded the Huskers, 56-46. Iowa State's biggest lead of the game came with 7:37 left in the game as forward Jackie Slaats scored from the inside to give the Cyclones a 73-57 advantage. "We came ready to play," said Iowa State coach Pam Wettig. "We con trolled the tempo and we had to sus tain the lead, which is something we've had trouble with. I feel good about this one, not only about winning, but it's good when you can go to the bench and get a contribution from your players." Ivy led all scorers with 29 points; Miller added 21. The only other Husker to score in double figures was guard Amy Stephens, who scored 14 points before fouling out with 4:38 left in the game. Iowa State was led by Smith, who scored all 21 points in the second half. Nebraska will close its regular-season home schedule Tuesday night against Colorado, a team Hill said is outstand ing this year. The loss drops Nebraska to 4-8 in the Big Eight, and 1 1-14 overall this season, while Iowa State improved its record to 7-5 in conference play, 18-7 on the season. "If we're going to have any success in our last three games, we're going to have to make some basic corrections," Hill said. "Colorado has lots of speed, lots of quickness and they're an excel lent shooting team with a very disci plined attack. It's bounce-back time for us." : a J ; ''" ' ""'"-'"T'T1"""" mumim intmili-iranmill nir murnMnri-iinlTT-ili i rTfT-lirr ir nmi mmr-nr rimr- ,r inimm nl Be One in the Navy or Marine Corps If there's no challenge, it's not worth doing. Andrea HoyOaily Nebraskan Nebraska's Ivy looks to pass the ball Saturday against Iowa State at Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa. NU men's swim team edges 13th-ranked I o wa By Geoff Goodwin Staff Reporter Nebraska men's swimming coach Cal Bentz just wanted the Corn huskers to swim ; well in Friday afternoon's dual meet against Iowa they did that and more, defeat ing the'13th-ranked Hawkeyes, 63 54. Despite the victory, Bentz said the Huskers main concern was to prepare for the upcoming Big Eight championships, which will be at the Bob Devaney Sports Center March 6 to 8. "We just have to see this as prep aration for the Big Eights and the NCAAs," he said. "We don't have to win 'em all. You just have to have a plan and stick to it." Nebraska's Tony Poleo won the 200 breaststroke to give the Huskers a two-point lead going into the final event, the 400 freestyle relay. The Huskers won that, nipping Iowa 3:02.38 to 3:02.48 to provide the final nine-point margin. Poleo said he was ready to swim a good race in the 200. "I was pretty pumped up when I heard it was going to come down to the breaststroke," he said. "That was my best unshaved time this season." To get better times and a psycho logical edge, swimmers often shave their body hair before a meet. "I really needed this meet to get my confidence back," he said. "It did a lot for the team, too. We feel we're a top 1 5 team. We always seem to put on a good show when we swim against Iowa." Bentz said he was pleased with Nebraska's performance in the 100 freestyle where Jeff Brown led a Husker sweep. The victory raised Nebraska's dual record this year to 8-4. Iowa's record is now 11-2. droit i if es and Tulje Special Prices on Tiibulars s20 Deluxe Tune-up M
