ASUN's 'joke' committee
could abolish UNL groups
By Kent Endacott
Senior Reporter
An apparent joke by ASUN could
lead to the end of several of UNL's
smaller organizations.
In November, ASUN approved a
proposal to form an ad hoc committee
to infiltrate many of UNL's 270 groups
that are "inefficient or unneeded, and
work to immediately disband them,"
said Jerry Roemer, ASUN senator.
"The main idea was to get involved
in smaller organizations and force them
to disband through a majority vote,"
Roemer said. The Campus Activities
and Programs Office has 276 groups on
file, but only 35 to 50 of them meet
regularly, he said.
The committee, Roemer said, was
inspired by the CIA, which was inter
viewing at UNL when the committee
proposal was passed by ASUN. The five
member committee has never formally
met, he said.
Dan Beck, who is listed as a member
of the committee on an ASUN docu
ment, said the ASUN committee stem
med from a "joke" committee on com
mittees social club among Ag Men
fraternity members and that he did not
realize ASUN had approved it.
Roemer said the ad-hoc committee
never targeted any specific groups.
UNL groups must file a constitution
with CAP and ASUN must approve it,
Roemer said. Groups also are required
to update their constitutions every
spring. If a constitution is not submit
ted and approved, he said, a group is
placed on inactive status and disbanded
after three years.
Other committee members are: Russ
John, Lee Wagner and Mark Robinson.
