ysEcer recruiting
By Jeff Apel
Senior Reporter
A new ruling by the NCAA has had a
definite impact on this year's Nebraska
recruiting class, Cornhusker coach Tom
Osborne said.
Although Nebraska collected signa
tures of 14 recruits on Wednesday,
Osborne said that the new rule, Propo
sition 48, has cut the nationwide pool
of prospective recruits by 35 to 40
percent.
Under the rule, incoming freshmen
from every division 1 school must meet
or exceed three mandatory requirements
in order to be a scholarship athlete.
Those requirements include 1 1 "core"
courses in English, math, or the natural
and social sciences, a minimum grade
point average of 2.0 for all of the core
courses and a minimum score of 15 on
the ACT or a 700 on the SAT.
"I think there are a lot of good ath
letes who can do college work but who
do not test well," Osborne said. "We've
gone back into our files and found that
some of our players have scored a nine
or ten on their ACT's and gone on to
earn college degrees."
Osborne said that he is confident
that the 14 players already signed by
Nebraska will meet the academic
standards and abide by their signa
tures on their letters of intent.
Nebraska, Osborne said, had origi
nally offered at least 20 scholarship
offers but six of those players could
not meet the Proposition 48 require
ments. Those players include defensive back
Robert Hicks, defensive end Shane
Lair, quarterbackdefensive back Leon
Otis, wingbackdefensive back Darwin
Snyder, defensive back Barry Thomas
and fullback Billy Williams.
The players that Nebraska has signed
are:
Paul Brungardt, an offensivedefen
sive lineman from Battle Creek
Chris Caliendo, a 210-pound line
backer from Brookfield, Wis.
Jon Crippen, a defensive back from
Houston, Texas
Gerry Gdowski, a 6-2 quarterback
from Fremont
Doug Glaser, a 6-7, 290-pound offen
sive lineman from Mesquite, Texas
Gregory Morgan, a split end from
Denver, Colorado
Kurt Hasley, a 6-3 defensive lineman
from De Witt
Karl Hroza, a defensive back from
Columbus
Jeff Miller, a210-pound quarterback
from Houston, Texas
Tom Punt, a 6-8 defensive lineman
from Sioux City, Iowa
Pat Tyrance, a tight end from Omaha
Kenny Walker, a defensive end from
Crane, Texas
Rick Wendland, a defensive back
from Topeka, Kansas and
Jake Young, a 6-5 offensive lineman
from Midland, Texas.
