Nebraska track coach Gary Pepin
and his men's and women's team face
the unknown Saturday when they meet
Colorado and Kansas in the Bob Deva
ney Sports Center at noon.
"I only know of one performer for
Colorado, and that's Donna Walker, a
hurdler for the women's team. She fin
ished third in the Husker Invitational
last Saturday, so she'll be tough,"
Pepin said.
"The Kansas women have a high
jum per and a shot putter who are prob
ably their best athletes. For the men's
team, they have a group of really good
pole vaulters, two high jumpers that
can clear seven feet, and two triple
jumpers that have jumped 51 feet,"
Pepin said.
Unlike the Frank Sevigne Husker
Invitational track meet that was held
last week, the upcoming meet does
have team scoring.
One person hoping for a good show
ing is Karlene Erickson. Erickson, a
junior distance runner from Erickson,
won the three-mile run in last weeks
meet.
"I was pleased with my performance
last week, and am a little surprised at
setting the meet record," Erickson
said. "I don't know much about the
athletes from Colorado and Kansas, but
I know Mary Amen (also from Nebraska)
will be tough to beat."
Tammy Thurman, a sophomore high
jumper from Fremont, says her goal for
this meet is to high jump six feet.
"Kansas has someone who can clear
6-foot, so that has to be my goal, too,"
Thurman said.
Both Pepin's men's and women's
teams are plagued by injuries. Record
setting triple jumper Edrick Floreal, a
freshman from Montreal, pulled a ham
string last weekend and won't be com-
r
peting. Laura Wight, a junior distance
runner from Letchworth, England, is
out with shin splints and only started
training this week. A freshman sprinter
from Omaha, Jim Sutfin, is out, and Jeff
Loescher, a senior high jumper from
Spearfish, S.D., may not run either.
Angela Thacker, the U.S. record
holder in the 300-yard dash, won't be
competing for the Huskers Saturday.
Instead, she'll be competing in the Mil
rose Games in New York.
