"N'o he's not, you elbow," I think, "his shoulder is still an inch off the n,at'" . ... , , I'm refereeing a high school reserve match, and I'm not having a good night. I'm finding out just how hard it is to referee at the high school level. I try to relax, but I'm worried about making a mistake. Before the night is over, I know that I have made several mis takes none of them too serious. Why did I want to be a referee? Prob ably for the same reasons most referees get certified money and a desire to stay close to a sport I loved in high school. Mostly the money. After being talked into refereeing a little-league wrestling meet last spring, I found out there was good money to be made as an official. According to Rex Jones, associate director of the Nebraska School Activi ties Association, most wrestling refe rees are former wrestlers who became refs to make some rnqney. "It's a good source of supplemental income," he said. But the money isn't everything, Jones said. While many younger referees are in it for the money, Jones said, many older referees stay with it because they enjoy working with young athletes. That's why 20-year veteran Jim Holu chek, a teacher at Lincoln East, still refs. "I like it," he said. "I quit coaching five years ago, but I wanted to stay near the sport." Whatever the reason for becoming a ref, Jones said, the referee has respon sibility during the match. The referee also has the responsibil ity for the wrestlers' safety. Because wrestling is such a contact sport, many injuries can occur. One of the referee's biggest responsibilities is to watch for and prevent situations where an injury may occur. Jones compared wrestling officials to their boxing counterparts. In both cases, Jones said, the official's job is to insure the participant's safety. To become eligible to referee varsity high school matches, Jones said, a refe ree must be registered by the NSAA. To register, a person must submit an application and a $10 fee to the NSAA, take an open-book test and attend a rules meeting. Once this is done, Jones said, offi cials are free to work any high school varsity match for which they can get a contract. Registration isn't required to work any wrestling match below high school varsity level, he said. Refereeing is a fun and exciting way to make some extra spending money. Officials are needed for many sports, and the NSAA certifies officials in sev eral sports, including football, basket ball, volleyball and gymnastics. For information about becoming a referee, contact the NSAA at 489-0386. Its offi ces are at 8230 Beechwood Drive.
