Simon, Silent Reply
take festival stage
By Scott Hill
Staff Reporter
One of the participants in this year's
Walpurgisnacht festival is singersong
writer Susan Simon, backed by Silent
Reply.
Simon, a UNL freshman advertising
major, has been writing for five years.
She has written about 20 songs, mainly
in the pop-style, both slow and uptempo,
she said. v
"I hope to pursue singing as more
than just a hobby," Simon said. She
said she may later have a chance at a
recording contract with Warner Stu
dios in California.
Simon will perform four selections
at 7 p.m. Friday. Two of her songs are
originally written, one is by Sheena
Easton, and a fourth is written by
Nathen Weinhold, keyboard player for
Silent Reply, her backup band.
Silent Reply, a local top-40 band has
been together for about five months,
and has worked with Simon for the past
month. Chris Root, drummer for the
band, feels Simon has much potential.
"Susan has a very good voice," Root
said, "and is a good writer, too."
Other members of the band include
Lance Lehman, Dave Morrissey and
Andy Wanek.
All four songs she will perform are
ballads, although the band plays many
different styles of music.
"It's fun working with Silent Reply,"
Simon said, "and I'm excited for Wal
purgisnacht." She said she did not know what to
expect Friday night, but she was look
ing forward to the opportunity to sing
her songs in front of a live audience.
"I feel Walpurgisnacht is a great way
to promote new talent," she said.
The band and Simon will be perform
ing at Concordia College in Seward
later Friday night.
