OSU guard Faggins
confident in ability
By Mike Beecham
Staff Reporter
With forward Muhammad Akbar and
guard Nolan Richardson out for the
season, Oklahoma State will look to
senior guard Terry Faggins to push the
Cowboys to victory Wednesday night
against Nebraska.
Faggins, a 6-5 senior, said he knows
what he must do if he is going to
replace the output of Akbar and
Richardson, who were declared aca
demically ineligible before the start of
second semester.
Faggins said he feels he can success
fully replace the two, even though
Akbar was the Cowboys' leading scorer
throughout the school's non-conference
season.
Faggins, a junior-college transfer
from Carl Albert Junior College in
Poteau, Okla., said he had a hard
adjustment to the slower-paced game
at Oklahoma State.
"I had to get away from the run-and-
gun and slow things down a little bit,"
he said. "It took a little time."
Faggins started the first part of last
season slowly but exploded for 23
points and seven rebounds against
Oklahoma.
From there, Faggins said, he worked
on all aspects of his game trying to
display the potential the Oklahoma
State coaching staff had seen while he
was at Carl Albert.
Faggins had arthroscopic knee
surgery late in September, but said the
knee has been giving him no problems.
"I twisted it a little bit today in
practice and it's a little sore," he said.
"But I'll be ready for the game."
Faggins said the Cowboys are going
to have to play a hard game against
Nebraska if they plan to win.
Stopping center Dave Hoppen will
be the Cowboy's main concern, Faggins
said, although he is confident that 7-4
freshman Alan Bannister will be able to
do the job.
"I've seen a big improvement (in

Bannister)," Faggins said. "I think he
can stop him (Hoppen). He just has to
learn not to let anyone push him
around."
Faggins has averaged 12.9 points
and 3.2 rebounds a game this season.
He is hitting 79 percent of his free
throws.
Although he has hopes of playing in
the National Basketball Association,
Faggins said he will use his physical
education major if that chance doesn't
come.
DN sports editor captures trivia crown
By Geoff Goodwin
Staff Reporter
Bob Asmussen will not win the UNL
sports trivia contest next year. That's
because he's graduating. (Probably.
We hope so anyway. We like Bob a lot
and we'll really miss him but we know
he's wasting his immense talents by
working at the DN. Oops, sorry folks.
That's Daily Nebraskan on first re
ference.) He did, however, win this year
as he has the last three years.
Yeah, he's pretty good. He knows his
sports trivia like Jimmy Carter knows
peanuts. That's why he's sports editor
of this paper.
But it wasn't a Cakewalk for As
mussen. After a first round bye As
mussen met Brent Skeeter in the semi
finals. Asmussen trailed most of the
match but rallied on the last question
to take an 80-70 lead. Skeeter still had
a chance to win but didn't know that
the New York Knickerbockers in 1852
were the first team to wear uniforms.
Don't feel bad, Brent. Nobody else did
either.
Then it was on to the finals where
Asmussen met Bruce Sharp. Bruce was
very "sharp" indeed in his semifinal win
over Kurt Meyer as he defeated Meyer
100-20.
But, after answering his first question
(What college did Oscar Robertson
attend? Cincinnati, sports fans!) Sharp
was steamrollered by the Asmussen
juggernaut as the defending champion
answered seven questions in a row
enroute to an easy 110-20 victory.
Asmussen was modest in victory.
"I was pretty lucky," he said. "When
he (Skeeter) missed that last question
I snuck in. That was the first time I
hadn't had the last question. I just got
hot in the final. The whole thing is
largely a matter of luck . . .what
questions you get."
For his victory Asmussen received a
T-shirt to go along with the other three
he's won over the years.
