'Fine Young' group
cannibalizes Motown
By Stew Magnuson
Staff Reporter
Fine Young Cannibals, "Fine
Young Cannibals," IRS.
I eagerly waited months and months
for this debut LP from the Fine Young
Cannibals, a group composed of former
English Beat members Andy Cox and
David Steele and their talented new
singer, Roland Gift. Their two 1985 sin
gles quickly went into "heavy airplay"
on my turntable.
Record Review
But I'm sorry to say that this Bir
mingham, England, band disappointed
me in a big way when they decided to
jump on the neo-Motown bandwagon
that has plagued so many of the British
bands over the past few years. I guess
it's just too tempting for bands who
can't come up with unique sound to
start imitating one of the most success
ful beats in music history.
Because of the strength of their two
singles "Blue" and "Johnny Come
Home" and their equally brilliant B
sides, I never thought the Fine Young
Cannibals would be the next band to
rip off the Motown sound.
These two singles are found on this
self-titled album, but the remaining
songs don't make the LP worth the
price. The only standout among the
new songs is "Funny How Love Is," a
torchy, jazz-influenced number with
former English Beat saxophonist, Saxa.
The Cannibals possibly could have suc
ceeded with the cover of Elvis Presley's
"Suspicious Minds" jf they had not
asked former Bronksi Beat singer,
Jimmy Somerville to provide back
ground vocals. His falsetto voice grates
on my nerves like fingernails on a
chalkboard.
I do admire Gift's political lyrics and
the attacks on the Thatcher Era found
on "Blue" and other songs. While other
former members of the Beat, Dave
Wakeling and Ranking Roger, set out to
become American popsters in General
Public, the Cannibals have stayed home
to deal with some of the deep social
problems Britain faces today.
Overall, I think the Fine Young Can
nibals have a lot of talent that was
wasted on a now-cliched beat.
The English Beat whose origins
were in the late '70s ska revival move
ment, outgrew their roots and went on
to forge their own sound. It is hoped
that the latest band to grow out of The
Beat, will go on to more creative music.

of Jamie Foster" and "Robber Bridegroom."

dancing classes at UNL
Tegtmeier plans to graduate in June
and then leave for California.
Although she said she has only a few
professional connections in California,
Tegtmeier hopes that with some hard
work everything will turn out.
"Her professionalism and her ability
to relate to people and give and take as
a human being should make her a suc
cess," Hofeditz said.
Tegtmeier says it will be hard to
leave her family because they are her
best friends. But their faith in her abil
ity and talent will make the trip to
California much easier, she said.
"Treva Tegtmeier is a natural, an
instinctual performer," Hofeditz said.
