Daily Nebraskan Pago 15 Thursday, January 16, 1986 Time off 'benefits' swim teams By Jim Ballard Staff Reporter After more than a month without competition, the Nebraska women's swimming team came back to defeat Minnesota last Saturday at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. "We're very pleased at how we did against Minnesota, not just because we won, but because we performed well, and we needed to perform well to win," coach Ray Huppert said. Huppert said the Christmas break was beneficial for :his team, because the girls took advantage of the time off. "They trained hard at practice in the morning and again in the afternoon, and then they went home to take a nap. They just can't do that when they have to go to classes also," he said. "So we trained hard for 10 days, and they responded well in a meet." With the win against the Gophers, Nebraska improved their dual record to 7-1 and is scheduled to compete at the Iowa State invitational this weekend. At Ames, the Huskers will be com peting against Kansas and Missouri. There will be no score kept, and all the events offered will be the same as those offered at the Big Eight Championships. "This will be a good meet for us," Huppert said. "Instead of the 13 or 16 events that are offered in a dual, this meet will have 20 events." "This will let us look at how we want to go into the Big Eight meet, because the girls will not only be swimming in their top two events, but also their third and fourth best events," he said. Huppert said that the meet should provide some stiff competition. "Swimming more events, it lets us see how we perform under competition. If we don't have meets like this, it doesn't give us an opportunity to do that until Big Eights roll around," he said. Part of Nebraska's success in the first half of this season has been cre dited to the performances of its return ing swimmers. "We have had very, very steady per formances from our top kids, the ones that have been to the nationals like Emily Ricketts, Erin Hurley and Dana Powers. . .they've performed really well this year. I'm also pleased that some of the other kids are starting to feel com fortable in the water and turn in some good performances," Huppert said. The men's team also had a long break from competition before travel ing to UCLA on Jan. 8, where they were defeated by the Bruins. "The UCLA meet was a good meet for us, and we felt it went very well," coach Cal Bentz said. The men's team also took advantage of the long Christmas vacation. "We really worked hard over break, and now we have to get everybody back into classes and through drop and add. Once we stabilize and get back into things, we're going to have one of the best teams we've ever had here," Bentz said. Bentz said that many of his swimmers are performing well. "Tim Brinner only missed the cut-off for qualifying for Nationals by one hun dreth of a second in the 100 breast," Bentz said. "Also, Doug Hubner is look ing good in the sprints along with Mike Edmondson. Dan Novinski, Mike Irvin and Chris Reedy are also doing real well in their events, and of course Jon Under and Ed Jowdy are looking real good. The divers, Eric Ognibene, Lewis Meyers and Wes Zimmerman, are look ing good also." Nebraska is now 4-3 in duals, and will be competing against Iowa State at home Jan. 24 in their next meet. Kansas comeback drops Nebraska GAME from Page 13 seven rebounds and Hunter had five steals. Hoppen led Nebraska with 25 points. Brian Carr scored 1 3, 1 1 in the first half, Logan scored 12 and Marshall added 10. Nebraska, now 104 and 0-1 in con ference play, will host Missouri Satur day at the Sports Center. Kansas, now 15-2 and 1-0, will host Oklahoma State . Saturday. "pIV I)V ' SUNDAYS g'QQ-TOOR. 2 LARGE BOWL OF CHIM UlkC&O PIP, CO&H CMP&.
