Tuesday, January 14, 1986 Daily Nebraskan Administrator says office operates smoothly By Jonathan Taylor Senior Reporter Despite four vacant positions in the Student Affairs department, the office operation has not suffered, a depart ment spokesman said. Ted Pfeifer, director of registration and records, said the several staff members are assuming the responsibil ities of four unfilled positions. The positions include dean of students, director of admissions and advising, assistant to the dean of students and assistant to the vice chancellor of stu dent affairs. Former Dean of Students David DeCoster left .UNL at Thanksgiving to go to Indiana University in Pennsyl vania. Suzanne Brown, former assistant to the vice chancellor of student affairs, left to work at the Pennsylvania state college system after the fall semester. Former assistant to the dean of stu dents LuAnn Krager left her office to pursue a doctorate in educational psy chology but still works in the counsel ing center. Al Papik, is on leave from his position as admissions and advising director. He left the office to fill a vacancy in the athletic department as assistant athletic director. Although the vacancies in the stu dent affairs office may appear to be a problem, Pfeifer said, the department has benefited from the situation. "We're using the situation as an opportunity to examine and study all of the functions (of the vacant positions) to determine perhaps if we are going to refill the positions exactly as before," Pfeifer said. Also, Pfeifer said, the new vice chancellor of student affairs, Rudy Lewis, "may have an administrative style and organizational preference that is different" from the way the office previously was run. The vacancies will give Lewis flexibility in determining how the office should operate, Pfeifer said. Some of the positions may not be filled if UNL Chancellor Martin Mas sengale and Lewis decide that some of the responsibilities can be combined and reassigned to other staff members, Pfeifer said. The decision on permanent vacan cies will be made within the month, Lewis said. The vice chancellor said he and Massengale plan to discuss the unfilled positions this week. Later this month, the university might start advertising the open posi tions nationally, Lewis said. Until the positions are filled, Alan Cervaney, an assistant director of ad missions and advising, will continue to fill in as director of registration and records. Lewis, with help from Gradu ate Assistant Ann Gradwahl and other staff members, is fulfilling the duties of dean of students. Other office staff members are taking over the functions of the remaining positions, Pfeifer said. Motorists also must have proof of insurance to register their vehicles, according to the law. Betty Zieman, Lancaster County motor vehicle supervisor, said the new proof-of-insurance law is enforced in most other states. Zieman said motorists must have liability insurance for the vehicles in order to register them each year and to avoid being issued a ticket by police officers when stopped. She estimated that at least 95 per cent of Nebraska's motorists have lia bility insurance. But they don't always carry proof, she said. ' A copy of the motorists last insu ranee bill is not accepted as proof of liability insurance, Zieman said. Lynne Haas, public information officer for the county motor vehicle depart ment, said the law is important, espe cially in the case of an accident. Haas said the law protects victims in an accident, and ensures that the per son who causes the accident can pay for the damage. Lack of insurance has "often caused hardship for those who didn't cause the accident," Haas said. -News Digest a certificate of insurance that gives the vehicle owner's name, the make and model of the car, the last three numbers of the vehicle identification number and the insurance policy's expiration date, Zieman said.
