Huskers bury Bulldogs, 99-56
By Chuck Green
Senior Reporter
Nebraska used 12 players to over
power Northeast Missouri State 99-56
before 8,149 fans Saturday night at the
Bob Devaney Sports Center.
The game ended the Cornhuskers'
non-conference season. The Huskers
will now turn their attention to the Big
Eight season opener against No. 9
ranked Kansas Wednesday night at the
sports center.
The Jayhawks defeated Southern
Methodist 72-56 Saturday afternoon.
"They (Kansas) were as good a bas
ketball team as I've ever seen in that
first half," said Nebraska coach Moe
Iba, who watched the Jayhawks' game
on television
Iba said he and the other Husker
coaches have to "convince our players
that they can beat them (the Jay
hawks)." The Huskers needed no prayers
against Northeast Missouri State.
Nebraska shot 57 percent from the
field, 78 percent from the free-throw
line and out-rebounded the Bulldogs
43-26. Nebraska also forced 16 turn
overs while committing only six.
Despite scoring a season-high 99
points, Iba said he was disappointed
with his starters' lack of aggressive
ness in the second half.
"It's really amazing our first bunch
can get ahead of somebody, but they
won't close the door," Iba said.
Iba said the reserves showed the
intensity the starters need to maintain.
"The last bunch that went in got a
couple of goals and it pepped them
up," he said. The starters, however,
"were just kind of wandering around."
Guard Harvey Marshall led the
Huskers with 18 points. He had 14 in
the first half.
Forward Bernard Day and center
Dave Hoppen each scored 16 points.
Freshman guard Darren Brown came off
the bench to score 10 points in the
second half.
Every Husker except for Deak Vance
played and scored in the game.
Vance, a junior college transfer from
Muncie, Ind., sat on the bench Satur
day night because his academic eligi
bility is questionable for second semes
ter. Iba said an announcement re
garding Vance will be made sometime
today.
Northeast Missouri State was led by
guard Jimmy Gooden, who scored a
career-high 24 points. Forward Steve
Liford added eight points.
The win raised the Huskers' record
to 10-3, the same non-conference mark
they had last season. Northeast Mis
souri State drops to 7-7 and has lost six
of its last seven games.
The Huskers faced three opponents
during semester break. On Dec. 23,
Nebraska defeated the Arizona State
Sun Devils 80-67 at the sports center.

Hoppen led the Huskers with 25 points.
Those points increased Hoppen's
career total to 1,955, moving him into
fourth place on the all-time Big Eight
scoring chart.
Nebraska led 40-34 at halftime. After
the Sun Devils cut the Husker lead to
42-36, Nebraska scored 12 unanswered
points to go up 54-36.
On Dec. 29, Nebraska traveled to El
Paso, Tex., to face Alabama in the first
round of the Sun Bowl Tournament,
which also included Ohio State and
host Texas-El Paso.
The Huskers jumped to a 16-10 lead,
but the Crimson Tide came back to
take a 39-28 halftime lead.
Nebraska cut the Alabama lead to
nine midway through the second half,
but that's the closest the Huskers
came as the Crimson Tide rolled to a
78-61 victory.
Forward Buck Johnson fueled Ala
bama's win by pouring in 21 points.
Hoppen led Nebraska with 20 points.
In the consolation game the follow
ing night, the Huskers overcame a 44
38 halftime deficit to defeat Ohio
State, 69-66. Hoppen scored 19 points
to lead Nebraska.
Nebraska returned home for a Jan. 6
meeting with Evansville at the sports
center. Hoppen became only the fourth
player in Big Eight history to surpass
the 2,000-point career-scoring plateau.
In doing so, he joins Wayman Tisdale,
Barry Stevens and Mike Evans. The
Huskers won the game 77-70.
