But some UNL faculty members don't think so. "I'm not sure that students could ever do enough writing," said R. Neale Copple, dean of the College of Journal ism. Professors. deDartment chairmen and deans of other cc lieges agree that writ ing is a part 01 education inai some times is by-passed for other kinds of instruction. Lyle E. Young, associate dean of the College of Engineering and Technol ogy, said that although he thinks engi neering majors should take more writ ing courses, it is also important to give students the opportunity to graduate in four years. However, Young said, writing skills are important for graduates in almost every college because they develop communications skills. Jim McShane, associate professor of '- ' .... I r7t. c 1 " English said writing occurs in places "where one must demonstrate what one knows." Stephen S. Hilliard, assistant dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, said writing abilities are assets in many occupations. Andrea HoyDaily Nebraskan Communication minors in the Col lege of Arts and Sciences will be intro duced next fall to students whose careers call for special communica tions skills, Hilliard said.
