season, they had little experience in
the backfield. However, the backfield
jelled as the season progressed.
Besides Washington and Carr, Ne
braska also has several other players
who made significant contributions
this year. They include Bryan Sielber
(30 tackles), Cleo Miller (23 tackles),
Brian Davis (23 tackles, two intercep
tions) and Mike Carl (21 tackles, two
interceptions).
With experience and depth, Nebraska
gets the nod.
Defensive backs: Slight advantage to
Nebraska.

Defensive line
The Nebraska-Michigan game may
be remembered as the "Battle of the
Defensive Lines."
The Wolverines were rated second in
the final NCAA statistics for total
defense. They were the st ingiest defense
in the nation when it came to allowing
points. Michigan allowed only 75 points
(five touchdowns) in 11 games the
lowest since 1972. The Wolverines held
their opponents to just under 3 yards a
carry.
Michigan's line is led by All-Ameri-cans
Mike Hammerstein and Mark
Messner. Hammerstein, a 6-4, 261-pound
senior tackle, recorded 71 tackles this
season, including 22 for losses. Mes
sner, a sophomore, had 1 1 quarterback
sacks.
The Cornhusker defense is led by
second team Ail-American tackle Jim
Skow. Skow set Nebraska career records
for number of tackles for losses and
yardage of tackles for losses.
The defensive end spot has been a
concern for the Huskers all season
because of injuries. Gregg Reeves and
Tony Holloway will probably start the
Michigan game. Freshman Broderick
Thomas will back them up. Thomas
recorded 13 tackles as a back-up this
year, including two quarterback sacks.
Middle guard will be filled by Danny
Noonan. Noonan, a junior from Lincoln,
had 47 tackles this season. Fourteen
were for losses. Defensive line: Slight
edge Michigan.
