Thursday, December 5, 1985 UPC plans Fiesta Bowl trip The University Program Council is sponsoring a bus trip to the FiestaBowl game between Nebraska and Michigan Jan. 1 in Tempe, Ariz. Sign-up for the trip will begin today, jay Mulligan, chairman of the UPC Special Events Committee, said the number of people who can take the tour is unlimited, but at least 30 will have to register. The bus tour, the first sponsored by LTC, will cost $269 per person. The cost'includes round-trip transportation to Tempe, a game ticket, transporta tion to the game, five nights at the Tempe Inn or the Scottsdale Suites, a Defense could dictate MICHIGAN from Page 12 experienced. At the same time the Wolverines 'have three outstanding receivers in Paul Jokisch, John Colesar and tight end Eric Kattus, Hanlon said. Jokisch, a 6-8 junior, spent his first two years at Michigan playing basket ball, before he switched to football. "Jokisch is a trememdous receiver. He uses his height like Harold Car micheal (a former Philadelphia Eagle and Dallas Cowboy) used to in the NFL," Hanlon said. "Our other two receivers Colesar and Kattus are also both good athletes, although we don't ask Kattus to run very much." Michigan defensive coordinator Gary Moeller said this year's defense also contributed to the Wolverines' success. It is among the nation's finest, he said. Statistically, the Michigan defense led the nation in fewest points allowed per game (averaging 6.8). It is second to Oklahoma in total defense and ranks sixth in rushing defense. "A large part of our success defen sively this season can be traced to the fact that we have gotten such great leadership this season," Moeller said. "We're going to need it, though, because Nebraska is going to be one tough team to prepare for." Moeller said that he considers line backers Andy Moeller and Mike Mal lory and defensive tackle Mike Ham merstein to be the defensive leaders. Four people will be assigned to each of the two-bedroom suites, Mulligan said. He encouraged groups of four or more to sign up together for the trip and said UPC would try to assign groups together if possible. Sign-up for the tour will end Dec. 18. Those wishing to go on the tour can sign up in Room 200 of the Nebraska Union. The bus leaves Lincoln Dec. 27 and returns Jan. 3. The program council had planned an Moeller leads the team with 132 tackles, while Mallory has recorded 99 tackles. Mallory is a finalist for the Butkus Award. Hammerstein, who has led the team with nine sacks this season, is a finalist for the Lombardi Award. "All three of those individuals Moeller, Mallory and Hammerstein are all three outstanding individuals who are great leaders," Moeller said. "It's because of people like them that we worked so hard and performed so well this seasoa" Moeller said that he will have to change his coaching philosophies in preparation for Nebraska. In Big Ten conference play, Moeller said, the Michigan defense concentrated on the Daily Nebraskan Orange Bowl tour, but those plans were canceled when the Oklahoma Sooners thrashed the Cornhuskers 27-7. Nebraska was allotted 1 1,500 tickets for the Fiesta Bowl game. Twenty per cent of Nebraska's ticket allottment, or 2,300 tickets, are reserved for students. Ticket sales for students ended Wednes day. This will be Nebraska's second trip to the Fiesta Bowl. The team's first appearance there was in 1975, when Nebraska lost to Arizona State 17-14. The first Fiesta Bowl played was the 1971 game between Arizona State and Florida State. bowl play pass. Against the Huskers, Moeller said, he will have to find a way to shut down Nebraska's running game. "Obviously, you have to concentrate defensively on whatever you think the opposing team does best, and with Nebraska that is run the football," he said. "Nebraska will throw enough and run enough misdirection plays that' they will keep us honest." Moeller said he would rather face a quarterback who throws 40 to 50 times a game than Nebraska's McCathorn Clayton, who is known more for his running ability. Nebraska's running game "is going to make this game interesting," Moeller said. "It should be one excellent matchup."
