Pago 6 Daily Nebraskan Wednesday, December 4, 1985 Arts UNL jazz ensembles play at Kimball tonight Two jazz ensembles will play tunes from BigBand classics to modern Latin style jazz tonight in Kimball Hall. At 8 p.m., Jazz Ensemble I, directed by Rusty White, professor of double bass and jazz performance, will per form "Night in Tunisia," by jazz great Dizzy Gillespie. A new arrangement of the tune, which was originally com posed in the 1940s, has only been recently released, White said. The group also will perform two jazz standards, "Little Girl Blue" by Rod gers and HartCobine and "All Right with Me" by Cole PorterKerr. Both tunes feature vocalist Wendy Leuth. Wednesday's concert will be the first time the jazz group has used a vocalist, White said. Jazz Ensemble I and Jazz Ensemble contemporary jazz tune, the "Jai Alai Hustle" by Rick Lawn. The song com bines Latin flavor with musical jokes that "you might associate with the 'I Love Lucy' theme," White said. Jazz Ensemble II, directed by gradu ate assistant Scott Vicroy, will play tunes by Gordon Goodwin, Nat Pierce, Bob Bockhold and Lennie Niehaus. The concert will feature various soloists on tenor saxophone, fugelhorn, trombone, trumpet, piano and drums. The concert is free and open to the public. Jazz ensemble I and Jazz Ensemble II are composed of 16 and 17 UNL undergraduate and graduate students, respectively. Membership in both groups is by audition only. Ipace Monkey's 'serious' songs are too cute to be convincm; By Scott Harrah Staff Reporter Space Monkey, "On the Beam," MCA Records If you think this new British techno-pop band's name is ludi crous, wait till you hear its music. Lead vocalist-guitarist Paul Good child sounds like ABC's Martin Fry on all 10 cuts, which is an advan tage, although the music and lyrics he lends his pipes to bring new meaning to dance-pop schlock. Record Review Uoodchiid said in the album's press promo that Space Monkey was formed primarily as a vehicle for his song-writing, which purportedly carries deep metaphysical mean ings. Here's a sample of his pro found poetic lyrics from "Walking Through Wonderland": Life is like a motorbike that's been crashed once or twiceMostly you can never tellMostly it 's justWhat the hellWalking Through Wonderland. Tracks like "Only the Night" and "One More Shot" show some fine, resonant guitar work and complex keyboard arrangements, but the problem is that we've heard them before by the Thompson Twins, ABC, Duran Duran and every other synth pop sensation from Britain. Maybe that's because members of Wham! helped on some of the backup work. Space Monkey tries to present itself as a cerebral, surreal elec tronic band like Eurythmics. But their cutesy beats, laughable lyrics and song titles like "Satellite Sinner" and "Spooky Moonlight" are too flippant to be convincing. Their most serious songs prove this. "Can't Stop Running," a nuclear protest anthem, has saxo phone mix-ins that create a much-too-lively backdrop for the recorded radio broadcasts of arms talks that are thrown into the intro. This would be hilarious if the song was supposed to be a parody of anti nuke tunes, but Space Monkey is destined for stardom. Goodchild has that pretty-boy look that sets junior high girls' glands ablaze. GPA; 1.5 CLASSIFIED ADVERTISING CALL 472-2588 $2.75 minimum charge per day on commercial ads.
