Cash's formidable presence not felt in 'Rainbow'
COUNTRY from Page 6
always a challenge to see what he'll
come up with next, even though at the
core, he will always stay the same.
But his latest effort, "Rainbow,"
leaves a lot to be desired.
t
He has some fine songs like "Here
Comes That Rainbow Again," which is
written by long time friend Kris Kris-
tofferson, and Creedence Clearwater
Revival's "Have You Ever Seen The
Rain?"
He has a lot of talented people back
ing him up, including Waylon Jennings
and producer Chips Moman. With this
much talent behind it, "Rainbow" is
bound to have its good points.
"Love Me Like You Used To Do," and
"Easy Street," songs about love and life
going cold, are sensitive, revealing
tunes that are sung well.
Story-telling songs like John Prine's
"Unwed Fathers" and "They're All the
Same" have a lot to say.
As a whole, though, the record is a
bit too overproduced. The background
singers crowd out Cash's voice much of
the time. Cash's usually formidable
presence is absent.
The bottom line "Rainbow" is
for Cash fans only. If you would like a
better introduction, pick up a copy of
"Live at Folsom Prison'.Johnny was
there for that one.
