Koko Taylor is the queen of blues.
With her gravel-voiced distaff ver
sions of great blues songs by Willie
Dixon, Howling Wolf and Muddy Waters,
Taylor has earned her crown.

From her origins as a gospel singer
in a church choir in her hometown of
Memphis, Tenn., through the rugged
south side Chicago blues scene, to a
Grammy Award in 1984 for Best Blues
Record of the Year, Taylor has out
classed, out-bellowed and out-lasted
any pretenders to the throne.
Taylor has performed with such blues
luminaries as Waters, Wolf, Buddy Guy,
Junior Wells and Magic Sam. In 1972,
Taylor started her own group, The Blues
Machine
On her new LP, aptly titled "Queen
of the Blues" Taylor assembled an all
star cast of royal partisans, including
Son Seals, Albert Collins, James Cotton
and Lonnie Brooks.
Of course, Taylor's real court is the
blues nightclub, where she and The
Blues Machine hammer out "Bartender
Blues," Dixon's "Evil," Wolfs "Spoon
ful" and her biggest hit, "Wang Dang
Doodle."
