John Schwery, Franchise Club pres ident, said members learn about fran chising as a special way of doing busi ness. Most franchises are growing busi nesses, Schwery said. Less than 4 percent of new fran chises fail in the first year compared with 30 percent failure for other small businesses, he said. Three years ago. UNL formed a fran chise management class and Franchise UNL student hit by turning vehicle From Staff Reports A UNL student was injured Tues day morning when she was struck by a car as she entered a crosswalk at 14th and Vine streets. Police said Jody Jones, 22, a senior in the UNL Teachers College, was crossing 14th Street west to east when the car, which entered the crosswalk from the north and was turning east on Vine Street, bumped her and knocked her down. The driver cf the automobile was not identified. Schwery said UNL was the first major university to recog nize franchising as a form of study. "It's neat that Nebraska is getting on the ball with this booming move ment," he said. The Franchise Club was formed last year to pick up where the class leaves off, Schwery said. Members meet twice a month to talk to executives and law yers in franchises. Leaders from God father's Pizza, Merry Maids, the Inter national Franchise Association and the Department of Commerce will speak at upcoming meetings. Schwery said video tapes of the speakers will be sent to other colleges. Shorts Actuarial club meeting The Actuarial Science Club will meet today at 7:30 p.m. in the Nebraska Union. The room will be posted. An actuary from Denmark will speak. Teaching awards Distinguished Teacher awards will be given at the Spring Honors Convoca tion. Students, teachers and faculty members can nominate teachers for these awards. Letters of nomination must be submitted to the chairman or dean of the college along with reasons for that nomination. Last year, the club helped four UNL students get internships. Three of those students were offered full-time jobs. Interns worked as management trainees or in the corporate offices of Taco John's, Runza Drive Inn and Merry Maids. Schwery said the group also visits local franchises. He said members want to tour Kentucky Fried Chicken this year. Because franchising combines mar keting, finance and other business skills, the club attracts people with many interests, he said. Learning Center is sponsoring these awards. Gay-lesbian seminar The UNL GayLesbian Student Association will present a seminar titled, "Myths, Stereotypes and Homo phobia" during Residence Hall Week in cooperation with the Residence Hall Association. The seminar will be Thursday from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Sandoz Hall Computer Room.
