Plight of Ethiopian Jews
theme of Sheldon documentary

"Falasha: Exile of the Black Jews" is an excel
lent documentary showing at 7 and 9 p.m.
tonight at the Sheldon Film Theater. This Cana
dian production, which documents the plight of
Ethiopian Jews, is part of the University Program
Council's Foreign Film Series.
Movie Review
The oldest Diaspora Jewish comunity call
themselves "Beit Yisrael" ("House of Israel").
Their enemies call them "Falashas," which
means "alien" of "stranger" and signifies a per
son with no legal rights. For over 2,000 years they
have prayed three timesdaily for their return to
Zion (Israel). Cut off from and unaware of the
rest of the world Jewish community's existence,
they have been subjected to tenturies of anti
semitism, but have resisted conversion in order
to preserve the Torah.
Scholars offer different explanations of the
origins of Ethiopian Jews, including theories
that they fled ancient Israel after the destruc
tion of the Temple; that they returned with the
Queen of Sheba from her visit to King Solomon;
that they belonged to the lost tribe of Dan; and
that they migrated from Yemen.
Throughout the centuries, Ethiopian Jews
preserved their Judaism and maintained their
own Jewish army. Then, in 1616 their Kingdom
was overthrown, their King Gideon was slain,
many were forcibly converted and all wore
robbed of their land. For three centuries, their
children were denied education and, until 1975,
they were the only minority in Ethiopia denied
the right to own land.
Now, 37 years after the Holocaust, this group,
thought to number about 28,000 (although it
once reached 500,000) is facing grave govern
ment persecution within Ethiopia, in addition to
the deadly famine that has ravaged the country.
Denied their religious and civil rights as Ethics
pian citizens, thousands have escaped to refugee
camps across the Sudanese border where they
are battling starvation and illness while praying
for the opport unity to emigrate to Israel.
Thousands more still remain trapped in
Ethiopia.
Much of the film deals with the reasons why
insufficient action is being taken. Americans do
not help more, the Israelis claim, because it will
hamper their covert efforts.
The Israelis do not take a stronger stand for
fear that it will alienate the Ethiopian govern
ment, the only non-Arab government in the Red
Sea area. After this film was shown in Israel,
however, the Israeli government sponsored siza
ble airlifts to Ethiopia
In any case, the Ethiopian Jew seems doomed
to lose a rich cultural heritage.
The film is in English, color, and runs 80
minutes. Admission is $3.
