"Working for the future" examines just a few of the many research projects at the university. The water buffalo in Egypt may help U.S. and international agriculture, said Bud Britton, UNL professor and cattle nutrition expert. Working for the future An Egyptian project to improve meat production followed a report Britton wrote after a tour with the U.S. Feed Grains Council in 1984. Traditionally, the male buffalo, slaughtered at an early age, doesn't provide the maximum amount of food it could, he said. Britton suggested killing the water buffalo at a heavier weight but Egypt needs a system to put weight on the animals. Egyptians usually feed wat er buffalo hay, he said. But, to speed up growth, Britton suggested feeding the buffalo milo or corn. "The Egyptians said 'well, water buf falo can't gain as rapidly as cattle.' They may be right, but water buffalo gain a lot more rapidly than they thought," Britton said. Grain provides available starch which gives the animal energy. Feeding grain to the water buffalo puts on pounds quickly, making more meat available to Egypt's population, he said. The U.S. Feed Grains Council, com posed of grain commodity boards, pro vided both milo and corn for three experiments conducted near Cairo Egypt. The second experiment involves feeding the buffalo hay and then grain mostly corn, to maximize weight gain The project should be finished in November, Britton said. The third experiment, also testing corn and milo, but in different propor tions, should be finished this spring, he said. The U.S. Feed Grains Council, a member of the Foreign Agriculture Service, sends experts worldwide to talk about using grains to feed livestock, Britton said the council sponsored the team, but did not pay him to promote U.S. grain. "As a scientist, I have to retain my objectivity, in order to retain the Egyp. tian's trust," he said. The team that Britton traveled with tried to convince Middle-Eastern and Italian customers that milo can be a viable feed grain. Middle-Eastern countries have a bias against using milo as a livestock feed partly because of the relatively low digestibility of milo grown in the area, he said. U.S. milo can be digested eas ier than Middle-Eastern milo. Schramm SA satisfied by punishment in theft From Staff Reports The student assistant for the fourth floor of Schramm Hall said Tuesday he is satisfied with disciplinary action taken against students who allegedly stole a television set and stand on Aug. 30 from the floor's lounge. Ray Scarcello said he was told Oct. 13 by Schramm Hall residence director Elizabeth Shopbell that the students who allegedly took the television had lost their "brownie points" as punish ment. The television was found in the Kappa Sigma fraternity house, 519 N. 16th St. two days after it was stolen, he said. Housing Director Douglas Zatechka and Jayne Wade Anderson, director of Greek Affairs, said university rules do not allow them to reveal the identity of the students involved or discuss pos sible disciplinary action. Both said, however, that students accused of break ing university rules are not given any special consideration in the university's judicial process. Scarcello said he learned where the television was from two sorority mem bers who overheard people in the Kappa Sigma house talking about the pujrw alleged theft. He said UNL police then obtained a warrant and recovered the television. After he talked to Shopbell, Scarcello said, Zatechka met with him and they discussed the matter. The meeting convinced him that the students in volved were told they would face worse punishment if they violated university rules again, Scarcello said. Zatechka said the students have paid the residence hall for damages resulting from the alleged theft. He said the university handled the matter well because property isn't always re covered. Police have not filed charges against the students who allegedly took the television. UNL Police Lt. Ken Cauble said no charges were filed because the department had no witnesses to the alleged theft. Brent Furse, president of Kappa Sigma, said university officials are deciding how to punish the fraternity members involved in the alleged theft. He said "internal house disciplinary actions" also are being taken. "The individuals involved in it are regretting that they did it," Furse said. LCD .
