"Blast Off is the newsletter for BLAST (Blues of Lincoln and Surround ing Territories). The newsletter's pur pose is to "contribute to the promotion and preservation of the blues as a uni que art form," according to the publica tion. "It's a small thing, but it's far reach ing," Editor Charlie Johnson said. "Much to our surprise it's succeeding. It used to be a lot of trouble to write it, now it puts itself together." "Blast Off' started in May of 1983 as the newsletter for BLAST, and although the club, which was started to promote blues music in the Lincoln area, has pretty much faded away, its publica tion remains. The circulation remains small, about 150 copies are mailed out. But accord ing to Johnson, the ranee is tremend ous there are subscribers as far away as Brazil and West Germany. Many of the suscribers are former Lincoln residents who want to keep up on the local music scene, Johnson said. Other subscribers are blues trade magazines like "Jefferson" (supposedly named after blues legend Blind Lemon Jeffer son) from Sweden, and "Juke" from Japan. "Juke" recently had a review of two of Magic Slim's albums, which were recorded by Lincoln's own Blue Dog record label. Recent issues of "Blast Off' con tained a review of an album by Lonnie Mack who has performed at the Zoo Bar, a profile of the MinneapolisSt. Paul blues scene by a guest contributor and a section called "Notes from the Underground," which features infor mation on blues clubs on a national and international scale. Although many of the acts "Blast Off' reports on play at the Zoo Bar, atnriosi arp not limited to it alone. "Lincoln has such a great blues scene, mostly because of the Zoo Ba.," Johnson said. And it's an honor for a lot of musicians to be able to say they've played at the Zoo." Contributor Kent Wolgamott is quick to point out that "Blast Off is not a slapped-together bulletin. "We're not a 'fanzine,' " he said. "I think we're higher class. We try to be informative and entertaining and give it a personal touch." "Every once in a while I think of quitting," Johnson said, "but I see no .end in sight." The magazine has recently expanded from a 16-page format to a 20-page format. "It's given me a great way to meet people from across the nation with the same musical interests," Johnson said. "Blast Off is published quarterly. The letter I wrote about Stew Magnuson's critique (Daily Nebraskan, Oct. 21) was not to put down his opinion on what kind of music he likes or dislikes, but to state that he put For Against's performance and music down when he admitted earlier that he did not even buy a ticket to go see them. I agree with you, Magnuson, when you state that we all listen to music with a different ear, but from reading your first letter, I got the impression that you didn't listen to For Against at all. I tend to disagree with you when you state that we should have to keep our mouths shut about what kind of music we like, but I do feel that if we are going to express an opinion, it should be done with tact, diplomacy and con sideration for other people's views and feelings. I have the utmost respect for your personal views on music. Thank God we live in a country where we have the personal, constitutional and God-given right to express our opinions. , Stephen Schultz Lincoln HAS EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO CREATE YOUR OWN THIN COLORED EYELASHES SPIRIT CUM DURMA WAX BLACK LIPSTICK LIQUID MAKE-1 SPEARS CANES TOMAHAWKS VIKING HORNS AFROS DOPEY WIGS LOOSE CURLIES CONE HEADS VOO-DOO NECKLACES HALO BOZO HEAD PIECES KEYSTONE COP HATS BLOOD CAPSULES IUMBO CIGARS MICKEY MOUSE HATS & CLOVES MUSTACHES FISH NET, HOSE HANGING EYES SPIDER EARRINGS COLORED HAIRSPRAY COLORED FINGER NAILS LIQUID LATEX CREASE PAINT DOCTOR SHOTS SWORDS MOHAWKS MASQUERADE MASKS WIGS COLORED WIGS RAGEY ANN WIGS BEARDS CREPE HAIR PISTO ANGEL WINCS SAFARI HATS SPARKLE TOP HATS INDIANA IONES HATS CLOWN HATS GRANNY GLASSES MONSTER HANDS FEET TATOOS SHERIFF BADGES INDIA HEAD DRESS FACE DECALS CAPES GYPSY EARRINGS GYPSY WIGS GYPSY BANDANA NUN WIMPLE COLLAR MAKE-UP NAIL POLISH HANDCUFF: PIRATE HATS EYE PATCHES CLO WIGS CLOWN NOSES WITCH HAT BROOMS SPIDER WEB WITCH WIGS WITCH FINGERS FANGS SPIDERS, SKULLS MONSTER BOLTS BURN SCAR CARTERS CHATTERING TEETH, GIANT SUNGLASSES BLINKY BOW TIES GAG BOW TIES GIANT TIES SQUIRTING FLOWERS GIANT SWATTERS NOSES BROWN N( PIG NOSES PARROT NOSES CAT NOSES DUCK BILLS WIT GIANT PACIFIERS NOSE CLASSES DELUXE BUNNY SETS CENTRUM GATEWAY 475-1655 466-4488 "va l v I I i J I 1 X ff 1 LA I i I 111 1 L JL A A 1 I Ll I V I 11 A 1 m m m i a lt i j v a j f Jl I Si I 1 ww i r i s - I I III w 1 .1 I I SJLX X L X f 7 1 . .
