Guest pegs Notre Dame as victor
It's a good thing cats have nine lives,
because I know one that wouldn't be
living if it didn't have eight left.
Last week, if you remember, I was so
desperate for a guest predictor that I
brought my mom's cat out of its seem
ingly dead state.
As bad as it may sound, the cat -won.
That's right. That cat, whom I
accused last week of being nothing but
a long-haired flea bag, actually handed
me my second defeat of the year.

I'm ashamed. The cat and I actually
battled to a 2-2-1 standoff, but it
claimed the upset victory because its
prediction on the Texas-Oklahoma
game was closer than mine.
The cat chose Oklahoma by four,
while I said the Sooners would stomp
all over the Longhorns' mud pies by 15..
The two games that I did manage to
pick right were Nebraska's 34-24 vic
tory over Oklahoma State and Florida's
rout of Tennessee. The cat chose the
Cowboys by 16 and the Volunteers by
eight.
The pair of games in which the cat
out-picked me was Auburn's 59-27 rout
of Florida State and Penn State's 19-17
upset, which rewrote the meanina to
the phrase high against Alabama.
Perhaps the most disruptive part of
this whole week other than my 19-6
record, which hurt the 78 percent win
ning percentage I had compiled
through the year was the fact that I
did not receive a single phone call.
It was OK to not hear from the man
with a trained gorilla or from the man
who wrote me a letter and claimed to
have a blind seeing-eye dog that could
bark the predictions. But I was hurt
that David Letterman never called.
This stunt definitely qualified as
stupid. It may have even given a new
meaning to the word, but still Letter
man never offered me a spot on "stupid
pet tricks."
My only choice is to give up cat pre
dictions and return to people.
With this in mind, I've chosen Terry
Hackett to do this week's predictions.
Who is Terry Hackett?
Hackett is a writer for the Daily Illini
campus newspaper. I chose him be
cause I thought he could improve his
team's record.
So here are our predictions.
Army 31, Notre Dame 17 at Notre
Dame, Ind.
The luck of the Fighting Irish has
diminished steadily, along with Gerry
Faust's job security. Notre Dame has
shown nothing this year, while Army
has everything going its way.
Hackett disagrees with me. He says
Notre Dame will win by 21-19.
Alabama 21, Tennesee 13 at
Tuscaloosa, Ala.
Johnny Majors doesn't wear those
dark glasses like Joe Paterno does, so I
think the Tide will roll over the
Volunteers.
Hackett agrees with me: He says
Alabama will win 14-7.
Oklahoma 21, Miami (Fla.) 17
at Norman, Okla.
The battle between the two former -
Oklahoma coaches resurfaces to see
who has built the better program. How
ever, I'll take the Sooners.
Hackett again agrees with me, but
picks the Sooners by a 14-point margin.
Michigan 37, Iowa 17 at Iowa
City, Iowa. (Apel's best bet)
Hayden Fry may wake up to a "red
dawn" after Bo Schembechler's Wolve
rines get done with his team. Iowa is
probably the most over-rated team in
college football because the Hawkeye's
haven't really played anyone yet.
But Hackett picks Iowa.
He predicts the score will be Iowa
20, Michigan 17.
Nebraska 56, Missouri 6 at
Columbia, Mo.
Woody Widenhofer promised a new
era when he came to Missouri this win
ter. Not to disappoint any fans, Widen
hofer has fulfilled those pledges by
bringing a new era of losing.
To my surprise, Hackett also picked
the Cornhuskers by 56-14.
