At UNL 'calf dressing'
means getting 'em in shorts
By Dan Lonowski
Staff Reporter
As many mudslingers aa cowboys participated in the second
annual UNL Intramural Rodeo on East Campus Sunday
afternoon
Many of the cowboys and cowgirls who had never mounted a
cow or steer took the roller coaster-like ride for the first time.
Though most riders were thrown immediately after leaving the
chute, they lifted themselves from the muddy arena, holding
their rears but smiling.
"The arena was a little muddy, but we watered it down a
little more to make a softer landing," said Janet Recce, rodeo
chairman and member of the UNLRodeo Club. "All events were
altered a little to make the rodeo safer, but the riders still got
the feeling of what it's like."
Events for men at the rodeo included cow riding, calf tying,
" chute dogging and dummy roping. Women competed in steer
riding, goat tying and barrel racing. Teams of men and women
competed in calf dressing. The UNL Rodeo Club and Campus
Recreation Department sponsored the event.
In the goat-tying and barrel-racing competitions, cowgirls
rode on the backs of cowboys' instead of horses. Team
members had to catch a calf and dress it in shorts in the calf
dressing competition. Teams consisted of three cowboys and
cowgirls. .
Eight teams entered this year's competition, 12 teams less
than last season. Reece said she doesn't know why the number
of teams dropped.
"It's hard to say, but I think we advertised better last year,"
Reece said. "We had more flyers out and more people knew
about it. We did have more teams from City Campus this year."
Most riders stayed on for only a few seconds, but when they
got up from the ground, they usually picked out a teammate

and heaved a handful of mud in the person's face. Sometimes a
wrestling match or something similar broke out.
Sometimes piles of people resulted,
The Army ROTC team decided the rodeo was the right time
to initiate junior candidates, and mud flew.
"It was all in fun," said Robbin LaFleur, a senior candidate.
"Besides, some of them didn't get muddy when they got bucked
off.
"Riding a steer was a lot of fun,'" LaFleur said. "I would do it
again if they gave me another chance."
The rodeo also produced some exciting moments for the
audience. Bob Wiseman, riding for the Misfits, scored 77 points
in the cow-riding competition. Lance Storer also provided
some chute-dogging excitement. Storer not only dogged his
steer in 11.54 seconds, but he also was the only entrant to
throw a steer in the competition.
Storer won the all-around competition for men while
Michelle Macfee won the women's all-around. Both were
members of the Wranglers. The Roughnecks won the team title
and the Wranglers finished second.
