Player assumes double role
on freshman football squad

Staff Reporter
Cleo Rice has assumed a double role
on this year's freshmen football team.
Rice, a converted noseguard from
Leavenworth, Kan. not only leads the
Cornhusker junior varsity through their
running and stretching drills before
each practice but also assists aca
demic counselor Ursula Walsh each
Saturday by demonstrating a computer
program to potential Husker recruits
and their parents.
"Computers have always been some
thing I was interested in so when I
heard Ursula (Walsh) was looking for
someone, I volunteered," Rice said. "I
really enjoy helping other people. I'm
the type of person who likes to help
other people before I help myself."
This season, Rice has helped coach
Dan Young and the rest of the Nebraska
junior varsity squad earn an unblem
ished 2-0 record by anchoring the def
ensive line.
Although he was a defensive end in
high school, Rice said that his transi
tion to noseguard has been smooth.
"Over the summer, I kind of slacked
off on some of my training so I lost some
of my 40 (yard dash) speed, which was
the main reason for the move," he said.
"I came up here (to Nebraska) know
ing it was going to happen. Coach
Osborne called me into his office and
said that he wanted to switch me to
noseguard because Ken Shead would
be gone after this year and he (Osborne)
wasn't really sure about the position
that Lawrence Pete would be in."
"So, I sat down and thought about it
for a while and decided that it might be
best for both me and the team if I did
switch," Rice said. "It really hasn't
been that difficult of a transition for
me because there is really no big dif
ference in the two positions."
As a high school senior, Rice earned
all-league and all-state honors despite
playing for a Leavenworth team that
compiled a 1-8 record.
Recruiters and coaches looked past
his team's poor showing. Rice played in
both the Kansas Shrine Bowl and the
Big Brothers Kansas-Missouri All-star
game and was the target of a recruiting
battle between Nebraska, Oklahoma
and Oklahoma State.
"Oklahoma and Oklahoma State really
put a lot of late pressure on me," Rice
said. "(Oklahoma coach) Barry Switzer
called me up and when I told him I was
going to Nebraska he started scream
ing and swearing. He (Switzer) asked
me how many blacks I had seen playing
defensive line at Nebraska. I said I
didn't know, but I might be the first, so
what?"
Rice said he had a similar situation
with Oklahoma State.
"(Cowboy assistant) Coach (Willie)
Anderson, me and him talked on the
phone for about three hours, and he
was saying that I think I know what is
good for Cleo Rice when he goes to
college," he said. "I asked him how did
he know what was good for Cleo Rice
when he goes to college because Cleo
Rice hasn't even been to college yet? I
told him (Anderson) that even Cleo
Rice didn't know what he was looking
for in college yet.""
What eventually persuaded him to
become a Cornhusker, Rice said, was a
combination of Nebraska's winning
tradition and the educational facilities
provided for athletes.
"What I was really looking for on my
recruiting trip was an education," he
said. "I came here knowing I could get
an education and still play football.
Without football, though, I'd probably
still be home sleeping in bed."
