It was night and the steady rain that fell all day kept falling. Inside Chesterfield, Bottomsley & Potts, 245 N. 13th St., soft yellow lights warmed the room and set the stage for open stage night last Tuesday. The smell of popcorn wafted through the air, which had a slight odor of alcohol in it. The bar was about three-fourths full of people, dressed in sweaters, jeans and other casual clothing. A group of friends toasted the even ing with their beer glasses. Every Tuesday night is open stage night at Chesterfields. Anyone can present an act for up to 20 minutes, and they can perform in as many open stage nights as they want. Performers should check in at 8:30 p.m. to get a time slot. Open stage runs from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. and there is no cover charge. From the corner of the room on the stage came the strains of classical French accoustic guitar. Open stage co-host Chris Sayre really knew how to set the mood on a cold, rainy night. Sayre introduced the first of the 20 minute acts. Scott Stewart did some strumming of his own with songs like "Faithless Love" and Bruce Spring steen's "I'm on Fire." The music switched from guitar to casio with the second act performed by Bill Sundeen. He played some Hank Williams and Graham Nash songs. He finished with "Let it Be." The next act was a group called Aspen, comprised of two guitar players, one of whom doubled on flute. They played a lot of music from the '60s mainly Crosby, Stills and Nash. The evening was one of sharing sharing a few beers, some popcorn and i fellowship. What a perfect way to spend i a cold, rainy night. j !
