Humorous essay wins
national writing award

An ability to write and a love of
humor won UNL junior, Karen Kra
mer the 1985 Bedford Prize in Stu
dent Writing.
"Kramer said her English profes
sor, Joan Griffin, submitted the
approximately 1,500 word essay to
the contest last January. When the
results came out, Kramer was one of
35 prizewinners selected from more
than 2,000 entries from colleges and
universities across the nation. Both
Kramer and Griffin received cash
prizes and certificates.
"The only stipulation was that
the essay be written in a freshman
level composition course," Kramer
said.
Titled, "The Little Drummer Boys,"
the humorous essay is based on
experiences in her high-school band
during her senior year. The essay
focused on the drummer and per
cussionist and was an exaggeration
of stereotypes one might have of
people who play these instruments,
Kramer said.
Kramer's essay will be published
with other winning essays in two
anthologies: "Student Writers at
Work: The Bedford Prizes, Second
Series" and "Student Writers at
Work and in the company of other
writers: The Bedford Prizes, Second
Series."
Kramer said that she prefers to
write humorous essays and plans
to major in English. She said her
future plans are uncertain, but she
hopes to attend graduate school at
either Northwestern University or
Iowa University and continue her
education in creative writing and
perhaps someday teach creative
writing.
