Monday, September 23, 1985 Daily Nebraskan Campus Recreation to offer variety of exotic excursions By Merry Hayes Staff Reporter Whitewater rafting in Costa Rica, taking a pilgrimage across Spain or hiking in the Grand Canyon are trips available to UNL students through Cam pus Recreation. The trips are organized by Mark Ebel, assistant director of campus re creation. He also will conduct tours of Costa Rica and Spain. Ebel said he became interested in Latin America during his first trip to Mexico. He said he is trying to promote interest in Latin America's "wild wil derness" and its inexpensive food, lodging and transportation. Such excurions are inexpensive be cause the tours are organized without using travel agents, except for airline bookings, he said. Using public transportation and stay ing with families also lowers costs. "The Costa Rica tour is not a "Holi day Inn type of trip," Ebel said. "We're g6lng to be roughing it most of the time," he said. UNL Campus Recreation makes no money from these trips. "We strive to break even' Ebel said. "Sometimes we lose money, sometimes we gain." The recreation department doesn't have a problem getting people inter ested in the trips. He said the Alpine ski trip this winter already is filled. If there is a high demand for a trip, the department interviews and screens pro spective participants, he said. "We will pick those who we feel are best suited for the trip," Ebel said. "That is, those who are physically fit and have an appreciation for foreign culture." Trips are open to students, faculty members, alumni and their immediate family members, he said. The Costa Rican tour is scheduled from Dec. 27 to Jan. 11, 1986. It costs $900, which includes round-trip air fare, lodging, transportation and some food. Eight to 1 2 people will be accepted, Ebel said. The trip to Spain from July 12 to Aug. 2 costs about $1,200. A walk along a historic pilgrimage route from the south west corner of France across Spain is planned. "It's an opportunity to observe the real Spanish life and to communicate with the Spanish people," Ebel said. The five-day hike through the Grand Canyon always has a long waiting list, he said. Twenty people can participate. Three people already have signed up, he said. The trip, scheduled from March ,21 to 30, costs $225. Camping fees, backpacking equipment, transportation and food are included. Weekend canoe trips on the Platte and Elkhorn rivers, Whitewater rafting in Arkansas and bicycling trips in Iowa and Texas also are offered, Ebel said. A backpacking trip in Colorado during Thanksgiving vacation and a cross country skiing seminar in late January also are planned. Some the the 37 senators who voted for LB713 have told him the economy in their districts is much worse now than when they voted for the bill, Haberman said. Lincoln Sen. Don Wesely, whose dis trict includes many depositors, said supporters of the payoff are "a lot mroe vulnerable" because of the 33-vote requirement. But he said several sena tors who voted against LB7 13 will support the correction bill because "we screwed up" the first time. Although some senators are still arguing whether the state is liable for Commonwealth deposits, Wesely said the Legislature has at least a moral obliga tion to pay off depositors. "We're running short of money," he said, "but I feel it's one of those things we have to take care of."
