hi. V Monday, September 23, 1985 Daily Nebraskan Married sex brings fulfillment to relationships, lecturer says By Jim Rogers Staff Reporter Christian lecturer and author Josh McDowell said the sexual revolution of the last 10 years actually has been a "search for intimacy " McDowell spoke to more than 1,000 people in the Nebraska Union Friday. He said the current generation has lost its "models of love" and lacks the abil ity to give or receive love. McDowell, whose speech was spon sored by Campus Crusade for Christ, said that instead of emphasizing "being fulfilled in relationships that will last," current sex education including that at the university level "takes sex out of the context of relationships." "Many people are having sex, but few are making love," he said. McDowell said critics of Christian sexuality often misrepresent Christians' answers to the question, "Why sex?" McDowell,, referred to the second chapter of the Bible's Genesis when he said the "main purpose of sex in Chris tianity is . . .not procreation. The main purpose is the unity factor." For "fullfilled, maximum marriage-love-sex," people need "oneness .in three dimensions," McDowell said. This oneness is the physical dimension of sex, the soulness or psychological di mension of sex and the spiritual dimen sion of sex. If any of these dimensions is miss ing, the result is a "diluted relation ship," McDowell said. McDowell, a graduate of Wheaton College, UCLA law school and Talbout Theological seminary, said the roots of sexual problems are "not usually phys ical" but psychological. He said Paul's first letter to the Thessalonians prohib its sex outside of marriage. This command provided the neces sary foundation for "maximum sex" and trust, McDowell said. Only in mar riage can there be 100 percent sexual abandon, he said. The negative aspect of sex outside of marriage is self centeredness and lack cf patience, he said. Today's culture gives people every thing but satisfaction in a sex life because it teaches them to fulfill all of their desires, McDowell said. But that attitude wipes out intimacy in sex, he said. People must rise above culture to have a "fulfilled love-marriage-sexual relationship," he said. To support his ideas, McDowell talked about secular studies that he has accumulated. These studies show spir itual commonness between the hus band and wife is "positively associated with sexual fulfillment," he said. McDowell said "one of the greatest needs in our culture today is forgive ness." He said accepting Christ pro vides forgiveness and "the power to be free." Many people today are not free but are "in bondage to (sexual) passsions," he said. He said they can only be free if they control these passions.
